STILLWATER – Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders is one of 85 players across college football on the 2022 Maxwell Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday morning.
Sanders, a redshirt senior, is also one of 42 quarterbacks named to the watch list and one of just eight Big 12 players. The Maxwell Award is given to college football’s top player.
Sanders enters this season as the reigning first team All-Big 12 quarterback after a solid 2021 season, in which he led the Pokes to a 12-2 overall record. He finished the season with 2,839 passing yards and 20 touchdowns, along with 146 carries for 668 yards and six touchdowns.
His redshirt junior campaign also featured top-10 wins over OU and Notre Dame, the latter of the two earned Sanders the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl Offensive MVP honors after leading the Pokes to the largest comeback in school history going 34-of-52 for 371 yards and four touchdowns through the air and 17 carries for 125 yards.
According to Oklahoma State athletic media relations, Sanders is just eight wins shy of tying Mason Rudolph’s record for most wins as an OSU starting quarterback.
His 6,911 career passing yards ranks in the top 10 among all returning Power Five quarterbacks this season.
Sanders will have his chance to try and impress voters beginning on Thursday, September 1 as the Pokes start the 2022 season off with Central Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on FS1.
