Mike Gundy Speaks for First Time on his Brother's Departure from OU
STILLWATER – It was really kind of amazing that the question wasn’t asked until the near end of the media availability before the Oklahoma State Cowboys ninth practice on the 12th day of fall camp. Then when it was asked the question came from a reporter at the school’s student newspaper. The question was what Mike Gundy thought about his brother Cale’s departure from the Oklahoma coaching staff? Last Sunday, very late in the evening, Sooners receivers coach and former OU quarterback Cale Gundy abruptly resigned from the Oklahoma staff. His Twitter message revealed that he had in the act of disciplining a player that was not taking notes as asked to during a meeting, Gundy had read what the player had on his team issued iPad and it contained a negative and racist term.
Gundy in essence was forced out at Oklahoma by head coach Brent Venables. Older brother Mike Gundy was fairly cryptic in his response to the question.
“It gave me enough information for a good chapter in my book whenever I retire,” Gundy quipped before OSU’s morning practice.
The implication was Gundy knows a lot more than is out there and might someday tell it when he writes a book following the end of his coaching career.
The two brothers are close, very loyal to each other despite having been on opposite sides of the state’s most bitter rivalry. The two stay level by simply not discussing football much. That is on public record as was the fact their mother, the late Judy Gundy, did not allow football talk at the family dinner table when both coaches and their families were there. This was espscially the case at holidays, like Thanksgiving where Bedlam was usually on days, even hours away.
Mike Gundy also said he had not talked to Cale about being on the Oklahoma State staff.
“We hadn’t even talked about that,” Mike said. “He’s got several other options right now that he’s looking at. I haven’t talked to him about that.”
Pokes Report has learned that Cale Gundy doesn’t plan on coaching football and is looking for an opportunity outside of coaching.
