What was Wrong with Cowboys Defense? It's Not as Simple as Tackling and Covering

STILLWATER – I get it. Stillwater was burning last night in the second half. The new turf at Boone Pickens Stadium was on fire and it wasn’t because of Spencer Sanders and the Oklahoma State offense. Sanders and the Cowboys pass catchers had their RPM revved up in the second quarter to the tune of 28 points and a 44-15 halftime lead. In the fourth quarter it was the Chippewas going up and down the field. Honestly, they had 265-yards in the first half without doing much scoring.

It was obvious that the back end was lost in the second half. Especially when CM showed some motion or a strange formation. I understand that we prepared for the exact opposite of what we got. It's unfortunate that the LB's and Safeties are so young. They couldn't adjust because they hadn't seen and been coached for this kind of offense before. I hope they learn fast! Baylor is in 3 weeks.

I think the team would benefit from having Coach Mason on the sidelines. He can put someone else in the box. He can call the right plays from the sidelines. His presence is key.

#'s 1, 2 and 13 playing more assignment sound would have cut CM's success down tremendously. That's about half the backfield having issues. Hopefully they coach this bunch up before ASU. Remember, the Cowboys squeaked against Missouri State last year, likely a much weaker team. But they came together as a team even withstanding a lot of WR and OL injuries/shortages.

I also wondered if having coach Mason on the sidelines might be a good idea. I think he could calm these young guys down and keep them focused much better from there.

Robert, do you know why Mason started out in the box yr 1? Could he make a switch to on the field this season?

What, we need Mason on the sidelines but Knowles was fine up in the box?

Come on people, the DC is not going to change or "inspire" the defense from the sidelines. Who's going to go to the box if the DC is on the field? A position coach can't go to the box, they need to coach their units and make personnel changes on and from the sidelines. Somebody needs to see the entire field. Somebody needs to see the opponents offensive packages as they come on the field.

Coordinators at all levels are "in the box" to see the field and....coordinate. They use the comm's to get their observations and calls to the field
