Big 12 Sees Movement and Change Ahead and Appoints Consultants

Publisher’s Note - This story was released by the Big 12 Conference office, but it deserves more attention than a normal institutional release. This reflects the aggressive and business-minded approach that new Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark is taking with the conference toward the future whether that is conference realignment and structuring, multi-media and television rights, and the sponsorhip and the revenue sourcing and building of the conference.

The Big 12 Conference today announced it has appointed WME Sports and IMG Media, both Endeavor companies, to facilitate its global content and commercial strategy. Leaning into the expertise of the broader Endeavor network, WME Sports and IMG Media will lead the Big 12’s:

    o media strategy, advisory and negotiation;
    o conference composition strategy;
    o premier asset assessment; and
    o sales analytics and valuation.

Big 12 Conference
Yormark speaks with Mike Gundy at Big 12 Football Media Days.

“We have aligned with a best-in-class team to build a best-in-class business strategy for the Conference,” said Commissioner Brett Yormark. “As we ‘Open for Business’ to elevate the Big 12, the expertise and knowledge WME Sports and IMG Media bring to the table is critically important to analyze and evaluate the merit of commercial initiatives that strengthen our brand.”

“We are proud to bring the full power of the Endeavor network to bear for the Big 12,” said Karen Brodkin, Co-Head, WME Sports and EVP of Content Strategy and Development, Endeavor. “Brett and his team are innovating, upgrading and commercially accelerating value across the full spectrum of Conference assets, including media, content, partnerships, championship events, music, entertainment, international events and Web3, and we look forward to partnering with them to realize all of their ambitions.”

As part of its scope, WME Sports and IMG Media will support the Big 12 in its multimedia rights and social media strategy; advise on the use of data, sports wagering, NFTs, and IP; help develop premium fan experiences; and deliver unique opportunities around championship and other special events.  The team will be led by WME Sports’ Karen Brodkin and Mike Zavodsky and IMG Media’s Hillary Mandel.

Beginning July 1, 2023, the Big 12 Conference expands to 14 members – Baylor, BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. The additions jump the Big 12 footprint from five states and 40.2 million people, to eight states with more than 76.5 million total residents.

just wonderful.... first you blow conferenced funds and hire 12 new positions, and those folks outsource their work.... BRILLIANT!!

pardon me for being a bit sour on this announcement... the announcement is a poor job of explaining how this will be helpful or beneficial.

The Pac-10 had better be more open to things or it will implode soon enough. Commissioner Kliavkoff was talking that nonsense that there won't be any more movement. UW and Oregon most definitely are interested in moving to B1G, as is Cal-Berk and maybe Stanford, which is about as doofy as U$C and Ucla going the geographically challenged route. Guv Newsom is trying to block Ucla since it's state supported but I doubt that's possible since football isn't supported by state funds, i.e. taxes.

I can see Arizona, AZ State, and Utah all being interested in joining the Big XII+ eventually. Colorado's leaders insist they don't want to rejoin the Big XII so let them rot in the Mountain West Conference. To make it 4 more members I could see Yormack & Co going after Oregon State if Oregon and UW go to the B1G. You would think Kliavkoff and the powers that be, to offset the USC and Ucla loss asking San Diego State to join and then they would need 1 more to get back to 12, but what uni makes any kind of sense???

Where did you get the info about 12 new positions? They would outsource what's mentioned in the article because they don't have expertise in those areas, it's kind of normal, no?

Really just tired of reading California Cowboys posts. He knows nothing of what he is talking about and tries to act like an expert on media marketing. Just keep your silly opinions to yourself and just think about them - don't write them.

here we go.... nobody is allowed an opinion if it doesn't align with your views. my goodness.

you added nothing to the thread, just bash others. And I said nothing at all about media marketing.

You have no idea what I may know or not know, you simply what to bash others for having original thought.

perhaps you should keep your silly opinions to yourself.

and, there is no obligation to read what I write - that is entirely your choice... so there is that.

do you actually have anything to say on the subject, or just want to show us what type of person that you are?

why can't we have open discussions about things without folks like you dumping in the punch bowl?

I got it from the prior thread on this topic.... and yes, that would have been my assumption also about expertise... but adding staff AND outsourcing/partnering seems like just adding bureaucratic bloat, at least on the surface, which is why I complained that the announcement didn't provide much information.

Yourmark announces reorganization..... (thread)
https://pokesreport.com/s/3271/big-12-commissioner-yormark-reorganizes-conference-staff/4

"This re-organization best positions the Conference office to serve our member institutions," said Yormark. "With 12 new positions and the addition of a business vertical, it enables us to activate in critically important areas as we contemporize the Big 12 brand, focus on the Conference narrative, innovation, storytelling and driving revenue."

Dude is a super hater. He pretends to be a life long osu fan but he hates on everything then gets more hateful when someone has an opinion. It's mental man. Like I'm pretty sure there is an official medical term for it. I think he lives on the forum just to be the king of conversation good or bad

I'm totally good with staffing the league office with experts in marketing, media, etc…. And using consultants when it doesn't make sense to employ. Can't understand for the life of me why someone would oppose the idea unless they're just being contrary. Oh wait..

LOL - silly wabbit, neither of those news releases says anything about "staffing the league office with experts in marketing and media" (as if the league office never had experts in marketing and media under Bowlsby - SMH)

NOBODY said anywhere that they were opposed to staffing the league office with experts in marketing and media - you simply made that up, as usual. It's what you do when you want to be contrary and start a fight. You make stuff up.

Nobody really cares that you are totally good with stuff that you make up..... you should be, after all you made it up.

You might be fine with the league taking our money and creating nothing, like that last regime did, I am not. We deserve to know what is going on, we deserve to know how this is going to help our university. The efforts of the last group caused the league to fall apart... Are you suggesting that we sit in silence and take whatever these agencies throw at us, while they rake in the multi-million dollar salaries?

You're just trying to pick another fight, like you always do.

How big is a league office supposed to be? What is the average for personnel and departments of the current conference league offices? How many have an office of diversity? An office of Governance? How are those offices going to improve the league office over what we got from the last regime?

How many conferences use outside consultants? How many consulting firms do they hire? Is the firm we hired used by any other conferences? Do they have a track record for making improvements in marketing revenue and revenue streams?

Are these staffing changes improvements over what other conferences have done, or are we just playing catch up with these changes?

Why can't we ask such questions without being bashed on by you?

Can you answer those questions?

Why is this not a subject that we can discuss openly without the cancel culture trying to censure conversation?

I would seriously appreciate it if Pokes Report or some other group from one of our conference member institutions looks into this and asks these questions.

Dennis Dodd pointed out in his article yesterday on realignment and ongoing media negotiations. This group, Endeavor, is the same ones being used by the B1G. So I'd say they know what they're doing.

Yes, Endeavor is advising the B1G who may have eyes for parts of the PAC, and Endeavor is advising the B12 who may have eyes on parts of the PAC. That recipe might yield good results.

yeah... .or not....

Endeavor is being sued for their exec grabbing the nuts of an ESPN anchor, among other issues that come with that Miracle Mile "hollywood" firm.

And now the rest of the story.... the recent B1G media deal....

Unlike most other commissioners, Warren didn't use a traditional media consultant. Instead, he relied on his legal background and a team of internal experts: Senior Vice President, Television, Kerry Kenny; General Counsel Anil Gollahalli; Deputy General Counsel Adam Neuman; Deputy Commissioner Diana Sabau; and CFO Laura Anderson.

Warren was comfortable with the staff he has built in the Big Ten's front office, not to mention the hundreds of thousands, maybe more, the conference saved by not hiring a consultant.

Another media expert, Len DeLuca, the former CBS, IMG and ESPN executive who now teaches at New York University's Stern College of Business, said the Big Ten benefitted from three major factors: the evolution of these mega-deals in college athletics; the structure of the deals that put games on over-the-air TV; and perhaps most importantly, timing. NBC and CBS both found themselves with needs and resources at a time when college football is flourishing.

"This was inevitable," DeLuca said. "This is the evolutionary process of college football reaching its next level. … The surprising piece for me has been NBC and the fact that they've been this active."

While the Big Ten did not hire a media expert in the traditional sense, Warren did lean on two consultants at times in the negotiations -- Proskauer's Joe Leccese and Endeavor's Karen Brodkin and Hillary Mandel..

Agree. Further, I think the "likes" in this thread are highly instructive.

LOL - the "likes" are you two jokers congratulating each other on what was demonstrated to be bad information.

you're making it into some self-fulfilling prophecy, rather than accepting that the "likes" were knee-jerk and made before facts were presented.

If you think that "likes" are "telling", then you might be hard pressed to explain why CaliforniaCowboy has more "likes" (stars) in this forum than anybody else, double the 2nd place poster. Talk about highly instructive.

Your attacks on me do not do anything but demonstrate your disdain.

what is "telling" is aggie getting 6 stars for a bash post..... imagine, people giving stars for bashing others. Sickening.

I'd probably have the most likes if I was on here talking all day long like you. I'm not real interested in the number of likes tho more so the quality of the post. For example your posts are trash most of the time. So I don't hit like. Maybe that's just the joker in me tho maybe you should follow up and tell me what I think?
