Follow-Up to the Avalanche of Early Coach Firings and the Domino Effect

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy has never shied away from talking about developing trends in the college football industry. One that he used to join in on the chorus of coaches in railing on was the early firing of football head coaches. Gundy believed it was only fair to let a coach finish. Then if at the finish the job was unsatisfactory, then make a change.

Robert, the timeline for firing coaches and starting the search may have moved up, but has the actual "hiring" of coaches changed any?

typically a school names somebody interim, and they finish out the season, I don't recall seeing many coaches changing jobs mid-season and taking over somebody else's existing program - they'll need to fire coaches, etc..

are new coaches being hired more quickly (i.e., in late November or 1st weeks of December, or do the schools still drag it on a bit even past bowl season?

Clearly a new coach would like to begin earlier so they could get assistants in place and have some impact on the recruiting class (or possibly limit transfers out), but have coaches been hired earlier than in the past?

Thanks

In the case of LSU, they fired Orgeron early, obviously to grease the skids on hiring Kelly the day after his season ended. Same for USC who fired Helton early so they had time to work out the hiring of Mule Shoe the day after uO's season ended. It takes time for the lawyers to smooth out these contracts so the coach with whom they are tampering, can know assuredly his future is secure upon the last game of the season.

I'm sure you are correct, but that is hardly and "avalanche" of early firings
