STILLWATER – What looked like a smaller grass fire is now getting multiple alarms as Oklahoma State may have to really fight to keep one of their prime commitments in the 2023 football recruiting class. Waco (TX) Connally four-star athlete Jelani McDonald, as well as a 2023 cornerback the Cowboys are trying to close on, Red Oak’s Warren Roberson, both hold offers from the University of Texas, with McDonald being more prominent and more immediate.

It is not just Texas we are struggling with this class. We are the #7 team in America and have not had a commit in 3 months. We better get NIL figured out or we will get left behind. Don't want to hear small class we are losing guys to Tech and TCU. We might be able to get by with the Portal this year but we cannot continue to recruit at this level.

UT Booster Club Representative (nonprofit): Thanks for your visit to Texas

Recruit: You're welcome.

UT Booster Club Representative (nonprofit): Here's your check ($$$) and don't forget to decommit from (insert your school here) on your way out the door.

Recruit: Okay. (starts to walk away from the line of visiting recruits picking up their checks)

Recruit: (turns and asks) Do my regular checks start after I sign my LOI, or when I enroll?

The good news is we don't have room for him anyway and rankings are garbage so him being a four star is actually a bad thing. So now we can fill his spot we don't have room for with a lower ranked or not ranked guy that will undoubtedly become a much better player in 4 years. Sound about right?

no... we use the Portal now. No time to wait 4 years.

Yeah maybe the next Malcolm Rodriguez, you know the guy currently starting for the Detroit Lions!

BINGO, right on on the money Cali! MAC schools, C USA schools, even the AAC schools that have potential NFL players will get raided every year by the FBS schools for their talent, how do you think Kansas this year and Baylor last year got so good so quickly! NIL and portal freight train is going down the tracks 100 miles an hour!!!

Anywhere from probably $100,000 to $ 200,000 but he has to prove himself like BJ Robinson before he gets the keys to the Lamborghini! Of course what has been publicized is $50,000 to every player!

How do you think Liepold has led Kansas from a dumpster fire to a potential 8 win season? He has done a brilliant job with the portal acquiring talent, maybe as good a job as Riley at USC considering his circumstances, which is why h will be in high demand at the end of the season!

yep..... that an "culture", there was a story about it at the beginning of the season...

Transfers buying in, ready to work

The offseason has been a busy one for Leipold, who added a handful of impressive transfers including cornerback Kalon Gervin (Michigan State), running back(s) Ky Thomas (Minnesota) and Sevion Morrison (Nebraska), linebacker Eriq Gilyard (UCF), and defensive end Lonnie Phelps (Miami (OH)).

Exercising his relationships with both his existing coaching staff at Kansas, along with Buffalo, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Nebraska-Omaha, Leipold credited his connection base with helping the process of steering valuable depth in Lawrence.

"I think when it comes to some of those guys, there's been a connection in some capacity," Leipold said. "Either to a coach, or more importantly, somebody in our locker room."

He is a really good coach who has had success everywhere he has been. The portal is lent the key to his success. It helps no doubt. Osu doesn't kill it in the portal either tho. We get a dude here and there but to just say who cares if we succeed in recruiting high school kids cuz we can just get guys in the portal is false. If you have been an osu fan for a good amount of time new guys young and old have a low chance of getting on the field early. So if we can't just clean house in the portal and it historically takes time for new guys then what else do we rely on? Y'all talk like osu has just been great recruiting the portal and that is not accurate. Don't throw one guys name out either. Like I say unranked or low ranked guy and everybody says Malcolm Rodriguez but no one mentions all the misses. You have to recruit good players at the high school level plain and simple and preferably some of the best. We can't roll the dice on developing diamonds and compete year in year out for ships. We have had this argument of this forum before. We win sure but we don't win big because we don't recruit at a good enough level. That's high school or portal. We have done enough and our development is great but if we recruited much better prospects to pair with our development we could be elite.

Also our recent success is very much tied to having all these super seniors the last couple years. Y'all need to look at the big picture instead of thinking so narrowly. It's ok to be critical and not just blindly argue because you think a guy is being mean lol sometimes the truth hurts and the truth is osu needs to recruit better or it will catch up to us again

yeah.... you're actually preaching to the choir, I don't think you said anything in either post that practically all OSU fans that frequent message boards don't already know.

Saying the same thing over and over does not make it happen.

HOW do we get "better recruits"? We've paid a whole lot of coaches a whole lot of many to try and figure that out, it is obviously not as simple as you making a statement about it.

And those lousy NFL teams, man if they could just "draft" players and offer big contracts then no NFL team would be bad. They just need to draft the best and give the biggest contracts. It's that simple.

No body is sayin what I said. That's why I said it. Y'all argue all day it's ok for us not to be great at recruiting because the rankings are bogus and we are gonna recruit the portal now. You yourself say that cali so no I'm not repeating what everyone else knows. You know I'm right and you want to turn it on my and say well how? You're right they get paid to do it and they aren't and fans have noticed for years. It needs to be better. I don't have the answers but I'm not in the portal solves everything club. What I said is opposite of what you guys always argue. Anytime someone is critical of our recruiting it's actually you guys that repeat yourselves. RANKINGS ARE BOGUS! WELL GET MORE MALCOLMS! WE WILL RECRUIT THE PORTAL NOW SO WHY DOES IT MATTER WE LOSE RECRUITS TO OUR COMPETITION!? Then when someone argues against those points y'all say well WE ARE WINNING! But again no one points to extra Covid year players. So I wanted to bring clarity to it because y'all have beat those horses dead even tho the points y'all make don't work for us. It's hypothetical. Like last cycle we couldn't get quality o lineman but we clearly had the need. So cali answer how that will work. If we have clear needs for guys at certain positions so we say well we will fill it with portal kids but then we don't fill them with portal kids and we don't recruit great talent from the high school level then what? What's the answer? None. It will catch up to us when these super seniors finally cycle out.

I was sincere and straight up honest.

I can't make any sense out of that run-on paragraph. Sorry, don't blame me.

perhaps you could "bullet" the points (if there are any), and separate out the questions or number them or something.

And it would be helpful if you could include actual facts and/or specific examples of what you're asking about.

Honest, I can't make any real sense out of the jumbled mess, and I'm not going to try and assume what you meant.

It's punctuated. The entire thing is. It's called a paragraph. So you are being childish or you're not smart. One or the other. Either way nice job flaking because you have no defense.

#OKState coach Mike Gundy on not taking more players from the transfer portal:

"I just believe in developing the ones in our program. ... We try to recruit the right players that fit in our culture and what we do in our schemes." For all you recruit the portal believers. Doesn't seem to be the tactic going forward like you all keep sayin

I don't think that statement says what you want it to mean.

"on not taking more": He takes a ton now. the debate is about not panicking that we didn't land somebody at some position, because the portal exists.

The transfer/portal or JUCO route has always been about filling holes in the lineup and/or adding experience. As our kids drop off the team at a higher rate, there will be a greater need to fill holes and add experience, regardless of what Gundy's preference would be in a perfect world.

We lost a ton of linemen last year, and two corners, among others. You're not going to immediately heal your team from that type of loss by recruiting high school kids.

What can you produce that supports that statement?

If these guys left because of Dickey, then it was only because better players were being brought in, and they didn't want to wait...

Hunter Anthony, Cade Bennett, Monroe Mills and Tyrese Williams all entered the portal in the weeks after the Big 12 title game and Fiesta Bowl.

Anthony played in 10 games in 2020, and was injured in 2021 - Nebraska
Bennett played in 2 games, wanted to be closer to home (Scottsdale) - San Diego State
Mills played in 2 games, was buried on chart wanted PT - Texas Tech
Williams graduated; came in as a center but got passed, played 3 games a RG in 2021 - ????

"Coach Dickey is a good offensive line coach and just what we needed here," Williams said. His decision to leave is based on being somewhere he has a greater opportunity to be in the line-up as a starter. Williams will have two seasons left to play. His red-shirt senior season and, if he chooses, a COVID super senior season.

Dickey's first year was 2019 he brought in:

Cole Birmingham
Preston Wilson
Joe Michalski
Taylor Miterko

2020:
Eli Russ
Monroe Mills
Cade Bennett
Trent Pullen
plus Transfer Josh Sills (B12)

2021:
Logan Nobles
Caleb Etienne (Juco)
Plus transfers Danny Godlevske and Chandler Anthony (Hunter's brother)

2022:
Austin Kaweki
Davis Dotson
Calvin Harvey
Tyrone Webber (Juco)
plus transfers Jason Brooks (SEC) and Casey Collier (Pac12)

Dickey's players have earned at least one first team All-Big 12 honor every season since his arrival, including Marcus in 2019, Teven Jenkins and Josh Sills in 2020 and Sills again in 2021. OSU had earned three total first team all-conference spots on the offensive line in the five years prior to Dickey's arrival.

In 2021, Dickey coached a unit that saw three players step into an everyday starter role and nine different players make at least one start. Even with the movement, the offensive line paved the way for an offense that controlled the pace of the game and moved the ball effectively. When it came to play in conference games only, Oklahoma State ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 in rushing offense, No. 2 in total offense and No. 3 in scoring offense. Josh Sills was a first team All-Big 12 pick.

Dickey's 2020 offensive line lost two starters in the season opener and was without seven different players at one point in the year. Despite shockingly hard luck with injuries, Dickey continually shuffled the lineup on a unit that helped the Cowboys rank among the Big 12's top four teams in both rushing offense and passing efficiency. The 2020 line also produced two first team All-Big 12 players in Teven Jenkins and Josh Sills.

In his first season in Stillwater, his offensive line paved the way for Chuba Hubbard to lead the FBS with 2,094 rushing yards and earn All-America and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year status. The Cowboys of 2019 averaged 229.6 rushing yards per game - OSU's best mark since 2008. OSU ranked in the FBS top 25 in rushing offense, total offense and red zone offense. OSU's 2,985 rushing yards ranked seventh in school history and its 5.31 yards per rush ranked sixth in school history.
