Oklahoma State’s defensive woes continued as the Pokes fall to Kansas on the road, 37-16.
With the loss, the Pokes fall to 6-3 on the season, 3-3 in Big 12 play. Next up is a home game against the Iowa State Cyclones.
The Cowboys have had no success in the Sunflower State the past two weeks, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Backup Jayhawk quarterback Jason Bean and freshman running back Devin Neal had a field day. Bean finished the game going 18-of-23 for 203 yards and two touchdowns, and while he’s not a traditional runner, he posted 93 yards and one touchdown on four carries.
Neal rushed for nearly half his season stats against the Pokes as he posted 224 yards and one touchdown on 32 carries and 110 receiving yards on six catches.
For the game, the Jayhawks combined for 554 total yards, 351 yards on the ground.
In the last two games, the Cowboys have given up 85 points and allowed 1,049 total yards, with 550 yards coming on the ground.
“We’ve got to go back to the drawing board, of course, and see what we did wrong,” Jabbar Muhammad told the Cowboy Radio Network. “I guess there’s some misfits in some places; they’re all good calls, we’ve just got to tackle better and get guys on the ground.”
The first half is where most of the damage was done against the Pokes. True freshman quarterback Garret Rangel threw his first-career interception, hauled in by Cobee Bryant. The Jayhawks marched down the field on the ensuing drive in five plays, capped by a 31-yard touchdown by Neal.
The Cowboys held the Jayhawks to just 10 points in the first quarter, but the Jayhawks posted 159 total yards, 76 coming on the ground. The second quarter was worse as the Jayhawks combined for 173 total yards, 163 of which came on the ground, a combined 239 total yards on the ground in the first half.
Tackling was a big problem for the Pokes throughout the game as multiple Jayhawk scores came on broken and missed tackles.
The second half wasn’t too much better as the Jayhawks posted 222 yards, 112 coming on the ground.
Injuries continue to play a major factor for the Pokes as several Cowboys played injured, with a few having the leave the game for good. Both Tyler Lacy and Trace Ford left the game and didn’t return. Jason Taylor II and Brock Martin both left the game with injuries but returned later in the game.
The Cowboys don’t have much turnaround time to get healthy as they play host to Iowa State next Saturday, Nov. 12. However, hopefully it’s enough time for Derek Mason and his defensive staff to get some things figured out in stopping the run.

- OSU has the worst defense (10th) in the BIG12 collectively regarding those above 4 stats: They're collectively 123rd/130 in the country.
I remember Mason Rudolph first start in 2014 against Baylor, we lost I think something like 49 -24 to a loaded Briles team, that should have made the CFP playoffs but TCU and Baylor got screwed that year, and actually saw some hope because of his arm and poise even though I believe he threw a couple of interceptions in that game, of course his next start was against OU in Norman and the rest is history! I was hard on Rangel early, but he stepped up and at least gave me some optimism. He needs time and was allowed a significant amount today. Can only imagine he grows from here. The defense, on the other hand, is in shambles. I have no idea what we're even trying to do, and it's obvious the D staff (or DC) doesn't either. The D is completely lost. If you watch the first series from the past two games, these guys are in a different world. Every play we're just chasing whoever has the ball. No one tries to tackle...it's inexcusable. I don't understand why Mason can't realize they're going to put up 350+ yds rushing on us until we stop them.

So I'm prepared for the usual 8-10 win years occasionally worse than that but sometimes better lol we keep doing what we do and it'll keep going the same.
