Another Losing Review: Quarterback and Offense not the Major Story, Defense Was

What the heck has happened the last two weeks to our front seven on D Robert?

Leadership is what happened. I'm tired of hearing "but we're young". Oliver was a freshman last year. Big 12 defensive freshman of the year! Pre-season all American! Did he just fall off a cliff, or what has happened this year? I'm sorry to be so negative, but our D can't even accomplish the basics. Regardless of youth, that should be the first expectation, however, it obviously isn't. Perhaps Mason has took a HC job and just isn't focused, idk...but it starts with him.

If we had a Time Machine, I'm sure Weiberg goes back in time and pays Knowles to stay.

Are you telling us that OSU didn't play its true more experienced backup QB because there was concern of social media backlash, ugly opinions, and the chances of winning were slim? Are you serious? No, seriously RA, are you serious?

If that's true, and HCMG played Rangel to spare himself, and his son, from the negative comments and ugly opinions on social media from a tough outing, (per your other excellent article on the injury situation, clearly tough sledding, but still …) and then what happened, actually happened, is flat-out weak. Unreal.

That being said, Rangel is NOW the back up QB.

He went out there and competed his ass off, took hits, stayed in the pocket and made some throws. And as you said in paragraph 3 - "little experienced Gunnar Gundy" can now stay on the bench, because even less experienced Garret Rangel (true freshman who didn't grey-shirt with more than 2years removed from high school) took the field and led the team. He's the backup now. No more talk of Gunnar Gundy playing unless 1&2 are injured.

Wow. Unbelievable. No wonder the team looked the way they looked if this type of mentality permeated throughout the team.

Whoa … didn't expect to read we didn't play our best in order to fade the heat. But thank you for the honesty.

We get to play another team this week with a coaching staff that runs laps around ours. Nice.

Let's beat Iowa State.

There is a reason Rangel was a 4 star QB coming out of Frisco! He is as you say the backup Quarterback because of his arm which despite the three interceptions is pretty impressive!!!

They offered Knowles up to $1.5 million but he couldn't turn down the nearly $2 million that Ohio State offered!!!

Sanders was a 4 star QB and he couldn't beat out Corndog
Illingworth was a 4 star QB
Kolar was a 4 star QB
Rudolph was a 4 star QB and Gundy wouldn't play him until he ran out of QBs
Lunt was a 4 star QB

4 stars does not guarantee you much.

Gunnar seems to be more prepared to lead the team.

Since Gundy has achieved so much recognition for his innovative 'practice routines' here's one for him: Take 1 full week of Spring Practice...layout 10 full wrestling mats in Sherman Smith ...issue open invite to every HS wrestler above 150 to come and wrestle/teach every defensive/special team player wrestling techniques...simulated from FB perpective ...i bet they would be amazed how quickly players would lock into it...clearly the tackling practice techniques being used now AINT' working for Coach Gundy ...Coach Mason ...
Kendal Daniels and others? They got a choice.. learn to do an Arm-Drag running full speed OR for love of god learn to tackle below the waist ...off to see my therapist ...

Eddie always brought out the football pads and helmets during the Christmas period right before conference play because he wanted toughness out of his basketball team!!!

Gunnar is a walk on and Garret is a desirved 4 star. Garret should have been playing more all season. Th O line is over weight. They fall down and hurt them selves. They can't get out to make blocks. Since when is signing a weight lifting coach more important than signing the best D.C. in the game. Sign me out as "sick of sucking".

hmm... the Gundy quote that I read said, I guess some suggested that Garret be pulled after the 2nd int, but you just can't do that... well, you can do it, but I don't do that......

suggesting, IMO, that the ego of a freshman QB is too frail to be faced with his own failure...

I believe that Gundy is too worried about public opinion, vis a vie his son, and wanted to give the other kid a shot, just to shut down the criticism. I was damned sure yelling at the TV to put in Gunnar after the 2nd freaking int.

LOL, Corndog was a walkon before he started over Sanders.... perhaps you should come up for air, I'm pretty sure nobody is "falling down" and hurting themselves, more likely getting pushed on by 300lb defenders, and having other guys hit their legs as they fall.

I think Eddie only ever did that once, maybe twice, and meshing sports could work in that scenario, but not all the football team needs to know how to tackle (e.g., the offense), and there are too many guys on defense/special teams to try to teach wrestling moves to, if our coaches could even do that.

what do you do with the other 50 players standing around for a week, and the coaches standing around who don't know how to teach wrestling, and why not just teach them to tackle?

maybe one afternoon have Coach Smith or someone come out and teach leverage, but a week? when you only have 3 to work with?

Gunnar is a walk on because that benefits the team. Had he not been Mike Gundy's son he'd have been recruited and a high 3 or 4 star level. Since no one really offered he didn't get rated.

It's simple comprehension. Rangel beat Gunner out in practice. The whole social medial crap is just that. Sorry RA it just is. Coach was right to not pull the freshman after his interceptions. One wasn't his fault and look how he played after. There is obvious talent in that kid and he needs experience. Get a dad gum defense that can be in the right position and finish or let's start letting some more youth gain experience. There is an obvious lack of leadership and fight in this bunch. I'd give them the first quarter to start proving it or bring on the future. I'd start with linebackers. They have not improved all year. I understand there's injuries but good lord the effort is horrible on d. Some have given up.

The WR's need more critique than the QB. If 6 catches the pass inside the 10, which was right in his hands, the first int. doesn't happen. And, the tipped ball int. was PI or D holding. He played well running for his life 1/2 the time. The OL is just bad and the receivers are dropping too many passes and not getting enough separation. The D looks like it is lost most the time. They played the right QB. I do not buy the Gundy would have got a bunch of offers.....

first off, you are never right, so let's get past that.

second I said what needs to happen to improve our fate, not what Gundy would do.

you didn't ask what Gundy would do, you asked how recruiting could be improved.

Gundy did not say that he would not use the portal, did he? Of course not. He takes a lot of kids from the portal... those kids might as well be 4-5 star kids, and he can still bring in his 3 star freshmen and develop them

Not here to fight just pointing out you were wrong. We won't be a big portal team so looks like high school kids is where it's at like I said. So we have to make sure we recruit better high school kids to develop.

This is about sharing opinions, not trying to prove anything. You can't prove anything on a message board.

I never ever said to be a "big portal team", I said it was my opinion to focus on high value kids there, since we can't get them the conventional way... and that is still my opinion, so therefore I could not possibly be wrong, it is my opinion.
