Oklahoma State Makes Two Offers: One up the Turnpike and the Other Down I-35
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State had at least two offers go out in recruiting on Wednesday afternoon and they were to a pair of players in Oklahoma at completely different levels and in completely different situations. The Cowboys peered back in the NCAA Transfer Portal and found graduate transfer linebacker Justin Wright from just up the Will Rogers Turnpike in Tulsa, and they also offered a preferred walk-on spot to one of the top high school receivers in the state and a guy with a brother they know well in Norman North’s Cason Cabbiness. His older brother, Cale Cabbiness, is already a successful walk-on story at Oklahoma State.
First, Wright, who has a COVID season and will leave Tulsa after playing through his red-shirt senior season. The 6-2, 244-pound Wright is out of Abilene Cooper High School in Texas, and he has been a stat machine on defense for the Golden Hurricane. The last three seasons he has earned some sort of All-American Athletic Conference honors in December.
In his red-shirt sophomore season Wright had 62 tackles in the shortened pandemic season with 9.0 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. He also had an interception and a fumble recovery.
In the 2021 season Wright tied for the team lead in tackles with 82 stops, 5.5 tackles-for-loss, and 3.5 sacks. He is a ball hawker and had an interception with a fumble forced, and a fumble recovered.
This past season concluded with Tulsa scoring a 37-30 upset over Houston last Saturday that Wright was instrumental in helping happen. He had 101 tackles this season with 10.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks, two interceptions, two fumbles recovered, and a fumble forced.
He most recently was honored by the AAC as the Defensive Player of the Week after Tulsa’s game with Memphis. Wright had a game high 13 tackles, a sack, 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a pass breakup and a QB hurry in the game.
Wright already lists offers from Oklahoma State and Georgia Southern already on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Cason Cabbiness said he was honored to get a PWO (preferred walk-on) offer from Oklahoma State. Those offers now include NIL opportunities and money, so they are worth a little more than the pre-NIL days.
“It’s pretty cool,” Cabbiness said of the offer from OSU. “It is an honor to know they feel I can play at that level, and I could go there and play with my brother.”
Cabbiness, who had over 50 receptions this season for close to 1,000-yards and nine touchdown catches, said he has scholarship offers from Northeastern State, Northwestern State, and East Central and is still hearing from a number of schools.
“I will keep my recruiting open and see what happens before I make a decision, but going to Oklahoma State is a big option,” he said.
