Oklahoma State Lands Potential Difference Maker on OL in Experienced Dalton Cooper

STILLWATER – It is rare in life that you get even second chances, but both Dalton Cooper and Oklahoma State are getting a second chance at each other.

Cooper is a product of Prague High School and earned OCA (Coaches) All-State honors on both sides of the ball and played in the 2019 Oklahoma All-State Game on defense. Cooper was also an All-State basketball selection in high school. He was vastly under recruited and wound up at Texas State University playing for an Oklahoma native and former OSU graduate assistant coach in Jake Spavital. Now with the coaching change at Texas State, Cooper entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and Oklahoma State and head coach Mike Gundy wasted no time in establishing contact and bringing Cooper home to play for the Cowboys.

Gundy actually used his home visit with Cooper on Sunday evening after the Cowboys practice earlier in the day the head coach drove to Prague to meet with Cooper and his family.

Pokes Report has learned Cooper will be in Stillwater this week to make his official visit.

Texas State
Dalton Cooper

The 6-6, 320-pound Cooper has started 36 consecutive games at Texas State and has been honored for his performance in the Sun Belt Conference. After playing one game in his red-shirt freshman season of 2019, Cooper started his streak of starting games in 2020. He earned Freshman All-American honors from The Athletic and was named by the coaches to the All-Sun Belt Conference team as an honorable mention selection.

In 2021 the coaches named him to the All-Sun Belt team (third team) and Pro Football Focus, the analytics people, named him first-team All-Sun Belt Conference. The top-rated left tackle in the conference based on PFF ratings, Cooper only surrendered three sacks on 450 pass plays and played 814 total snaps (810 at left tackle). In all, he played just under 2,600 snaps for Texas State University.

Cooper was a unanimous preseason All-Sun Belt pick in 2022.

Cooper, like all NCAA Transfer Portal players, does not sign any paper work other than a financial aid agreement, which binds Oklahoma State to providing academic aid and room and board for the transferring player. Theplayer is not bound to the school until either attending a class or practicing with the program. Oklahoma State hopes to have as many of the transfer players as possible to Arizona on the bowl trip to practice, which the NCAA has now made possible again for mid-year transfers.

This is cool. Also, still find it funny that the comments were all deleted after someone with inside info scooped it up first. Someone got their feelings hurt, LOL.

Perhaps Mike will turn over a new leaf in recruiting and become a strong and vocal proponent of Portal recruiting. If you can't get the quality and effectiveness straight out of high school, then focus on proven talent in the portal. Love seeing quality Oklahoma kids coming home to roost.

You would be wrong. It wasn't in the best interest of OSU for my post to stay up. Dalton hadn't made it publicly official at that point either.

Welcome aboard.

Now let's see if he can get in Glass shape and beat out some of our returners.

I'm guessing this will free up Brooks to stay at Guard.

Since the Bobcats are not bowl eligible, I suspect he will get to OSU as quickly as possible.

He tagged Dickey in his post. I'm wondering if he is staying around. Please lord let it work this time if he stays. My heart can't take another year of o line play like we have had for a long while now. If Dickey is sticking around I hope he coaches like his job is on the line

Look for one maybe two more depending on Hunter Woodard decision! The young analyst who breaks down the film and marks all the check boxes is the closest thing to a Joe Wickline that we have had in ten years! His last name happens to be Allen!!!

hopefully.....

Our OLine has been decent the past few years, aside from this season where we had all the injuries, and green backups. And even at that, there were several bright spots with this year's OLine players.

Bright spots? I mean sure the jerseys have Americas brightest Orange on them. There wasn't anything bright about this offensive line this season.

you keep bashing the team, but you never provide any specifies.

Wilson was decent for his first year at center. Brooks came on and graded well after he got acclimated.

We played new guys at almost every position (except Springfield), and starters we had counted on, went down (Woodward / Birmingham)

We have a very solid foundation for the OLIne next season with Wilson, Brooks and Birmingham, and now lots of guys with solid experience that we can work into the rotation.

.. I actually mean bright spots. I said players, you keep saying line. major disconnect.

news flash, we are not replacing the line... so try to find some happy medium.

which spots exactly do you think we need better / more experienced players?

Wilson is way to small to play center at this level. He is more of a guard. Springfield doesn't belong on a P5 football field. Eteine has concrete in his shoes. The line that is constructed as it is not good. We have young guys sure! We haven't proven in years that we can provide actual development in that area. Until we see improvements Dickey has to go no matter what.
Brooks is very good at the guard position. We played him there because we didn't have any bodies. Dickey kept wanting to play him at Tackle.

Your starting o line next year will consist of Wilson at center, Brooks at one guard, Birmingham or Woodard at the other guard (depending on Woddards decision to come back or turn pro), Dalton Cooper at right tackle and either Etienne or Savion Washington at left tackle if he pulls the trigger and decides to come to OSU!!!!!!!!!! Three of the five will have been brought in by Zach Allen! He knows more about what it takes to put together a good offensive line than YOU EVER WILL IN YOUR PATHETIC LIFE!

Washington will be in CO with his old coach.

Glad that *checks notes* an offensive analyst is recruiting for a P5 team.

Depends on the NIL Deal! Get with damn program that how it works today old man! It is down to OSU and Kentucky for him!

2022 Offensive line was the worst group in OSU team. LG and RT spots especially. Even Wilson was barely average when he played after Texas. If there is one spot where major renovation is needed, its Oline. And its not even close to any other position. Etienne was decent at times, have to improve and grow. Not playing up to his potential.

Birmingham and woodard are the Best guys in the team, when Woodard was not playing, it was almost a disaster. We will mostly not have Woodard next year, next best guards we have are Cole and Brooks. Wilson have to get better. Looking forward to see how Logan Nobles and Austin Kawecki fight for tackle spots.

Wouldn't you keep Cooper at the position he's been at for 3 years LT and Washington at his current position of RT? Brooks at LG and the other two spots are a battle IMO.

I don know if Savion Washington is better than Etienne looking at his film

He is a better run blocker than Etienne but Etienne may have a slight edge in pass pro! In this offense the tackle has to be able to seal the corner on the outside zone play and Etienne struggled with that this year!

It depends on how quickly he picks up the scheme, plus he was about all they had on the outside so that is why he was at tackle plus his height (6-5 to 6"6"). They ran a different system than we do under Spavital at Texas State. He used more Holgersen/Leach concepts since he was a GA and an assistant under Dana for about four years! He is more of a Sills type and could even possibly play inside if Woodard decides to pursue the NFL opportunities! Sills was tried at both tackle spots since he played tackle in the West Virginia scheme being 6'6", especially in 2020, when we had a couple of guys go down with injuries but it proved to not be a good fit!

Wilson was literally playing on one leg after the Texas Tech game, look at those two massive braces that they strapped on him during the second half of the season! Also the highest rated O lineman this year based on game grades was Brooks! Look at the run production we had against West Virginia when he was finally full speed! Most of those runs Gordon ripped off were behind his blocks! And yes you are correct Kawecki will play a lot next year!!!
rcfb

Either Wilson should not have played, or he was missing assignments. Not holding on to your guys is below average play. Either its on him or the coaches. Either way, he was below average after the injury.
rcfb
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree with this. Etienne def have to improve on sealing the corner. Also, if he doesn't have a guy to block, he should give a hand to LG if needed. He freezes most of the time.

Again it is going to probably come down to NIL, old Coach Prime is having to beat the bushes to get in the game here because Colorado had very little in that regard when he came in. He has told people they had a lot more at Jackson State than Colorado because of the money that people like Nike and a couple of apparel companies kicked in, how do you think he got a couple of four and five stars to bypass FBS power 5 schools to come to Jackson State??? There are still two SEC schools in the picture also $$$$$$$$$!
