Oklahoma State Lands Potential Difference Maker on OL in Experienced Dalton Cooper

STILLWATER – It is rare in life that you get even second chances, but both Dalton Cooper and Oklahoma State are getting a second chance at each other.

Cooper is a product of Prague High School and earned OCA (Coaches) All-State honors on both sides of the ball and played in the 2019 Oklahoma All-State Game on defense. Cooper was also an All-State basketball selection in high school. He was vastly under recruited and wound up at Texas State University playing for an Oklahoma native and former OSU graduate assistant coach in Jake Spavital. Now with the coaching change at Texas State, Cooper entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and Oklahoma State and head coach Mike Gundy wasted no time in establishing contact and bringing Cooper home to play for the Cowboys.

Gundy actually used his home visit with Cooper on Sunday evening after the Cowboys practice earlier in the day the head coach drove to Prague to meet with Cooper and his family.

Pokes Report has learned Cooper will be in Stillwater this week to make his official visit.

Texas State
Dalton Cooper

The 6-6, 320-pound Cooper has started 36 consecutive games at Texas State and has been honored for his performance in the Sun Belt Conference. After playing one game in his red-shirt freshman season of 2019, Cooper started his streak of starting games in 2020. He earned Freshman All-American honors from The Athletic and was named by the coaches to the All-Sun Belt Conference team as an honorable mention selection.

In 2021 the coaches named him to the All-Sun Belt team (third team) and Pro Football Focus, the analytics people, named him first-team All-Sun Belt Conference. The top-rated left tackle in the conference based on PFF ratings, Cooper only surrendered three sacks on 450 pass plays and played 814 total snaps (810 at left tackle). In all, he played just under 2,600 snaps for Texas State University.

Cooper was a unanimous preseason All-Sun Belt pick in 2022.

Cooper, like all NCAA Transfer Portal players, does not sign any paper work other than a financial aid agreement, which binds Oklahoma State to providing academic aid and room and board for the transferring player. Theplayer is not bound to the school until either attending a class or practicing with the program. Oklahoma State hopes to have as many of the transfer players as possible to Arizona on the bowl trip to practice, which the NCAA has now made possible again for mid-year transfers.

Wilson is way to small to play center at this level. He is more of a guard. Springfield doesn't belong on a P5 football field. Eteine has concrete in his shoes. The line that is constructed as it is not good. We have young guys sure! We haven't proven in years that we can provide actual development in that area. Until we see improvements Dickey has to go no matter what.
Brooks is very good at the guard position. We played him there because we didn't have any bodies. Dickey kept wanting to play him at Tackle.
Maybe I should pay your way to the extreme camp they have for fans every year during the preseason and I will have you become Zach Allen's Special project, you know, like the ******ed kid who has to have special tutoring, that should be a real kick for him!!! You do know what the extreme camp is don't you? Hell if you are sitting in the Suites they probably hit you up twice a year to attend the extreme camp! I sit up in the club section and get a notice about it at least once a year!
why do you try, he doesn't even know who Zach Allen is, he had to look him up to come up with his just an "analyst" comment.

and... Wilson is "too small" at 6-5 295? LOL. Godlevske was 6-3 300 and four year starter Lundblade was 6-3 300. If anything, Wilson is too tall for a typical Center, Wilson has Tackle length.

and... FWIW... Birmingham has played almost all of his games for OSU at LT. (3 at G, and last 13 at LT)

I knew exactly who he was. A coach that is now on staff as an analyst. The more people that are on staff the better. It's just funny you're all in on a guy that doesn't and can't have any on field direction with guys. His job is to look at stats and compile tendency for games. He also is the guy anyone with a pulse sends tape to so that he can filter it to the coaches to see if he the guy is good enough to offer.

Yes, Wilson is too small and not strong enough. You gotta have an anchor there. Is he athletic enough to play center sure. Just think at this level and higher you need to be a big strong body that knows leverage. Maybe he gets better in the offseason.

Prospect analyst for offensive line. I understand what you are saying. You are 100 percent correct.

Your future offensive line coach, you people clamoring for another Wickline, you are looking at him! His two mentors when he played here from 2005 to 2008 were Joe Deforrest and Joe Wickline!

Either Wilson should not have played, or he was missing assignments. Not holding on to your guys is below average play. Either its on him or the coaches. Either way, he was below average after the injury.

Unfortunately the guy they hoped would be the starting center, Tyrese Williams, choose to enter the portal last Spring then decided to totally quit football when he received his degree because he got a high paying job with Dell down in Round Rock, Texas!

I think I'd rather have an experienced o line coach. One with a proven d1 record but also a true proven ability to recruit guys that have played at a high level. I think we need to veer away from developmental coaches as well as developmental recruits. We have tried that over and over. Let's get proven experience at a high level for once. We always get someone's leftovers at the tail end of their success. Let's get a dude that is currently making waves in the college football world.

Probably a couple of years down the road! He has an eye for talent and ability, plus he is a relentless worker who isn't afraid to put in long hours at the office! You already saw some of that with Brooks this year, keep an eye on two freshmen in the Spring in Kawicki and Dotson, plus Dalton coming in through the portal and hopefully big old Washington, a nice NIL deal will get him hear I believe, plus his father wants him to come to OSU as well! We shall see in a couple of days about his choice of school!

He has already been a head coach at a lower level and this is his thirteenth year in the profession, he has coached on both sides of the line both O and D and has been a coordinator as well for a couple of years! Remember Levy Alcock an All Big XII lineman in 2010 and 2011, plus the center we had at the time that was also All conference in 2012, both were coached by him at NEO!!!

I honestly say this with all due respect but that's not the strongest resume. 2010-2011 was a long time ago and I looked into his coaching resume and it's not particularly impressive. He has been decent at that level but I don't see how that would guarantee translate to div 1. Not to say he couldn't eventually become that but again that would take time and development. Osu is a legit power 5 school. We need a coach that has proven he can succeed at this level. Proven he can recruit high level players year in and year out as well as a proven track record of developing them. I believe Allen may be an up and comer so again no disrespect but we should be past the days of having to hire these types of guys to get by. We need a true impact coach to step in and make it work sooner rather than later.

Now don't get me wrong. If he got the job and ran with it and succeeded then that would be stellar so I'm not rooting against him I just think the odds aren't necessarily worth more years of average or worse. At this point we need serious improvement up front. Not just for next season but long term. So one day this conversation isn't a regular thing. It would be nice to just trust that position was in good hands

Dickey put five players in the NFL during his time under Snyder at K State and was a PROVEN COACH! Yet he has struggled to recruit and outside of 2019, his first year here, has had struggles with maintaining consistency on the line, some of that is bad luck with injuries and such but right now Zach Allen is SAVING HIS JOB by going out and finding talent that can play and win at this level of competition!!!! He also produced an All SEC lineman in 2015 and an All PAC 12 lineman in 2017 who came in through NEO and went on to four year schools but you are entitled to your opinion!!! It's like I told your buddy Mr. Ed, the only guarantees in life are death and taxes!!!

I don't even know who mr. Ed is? But I agree Dickey hasn't done well. We got him far too late. We need an Allen but that has done it at this level. Allen might be getting guys to help Dickey but no results have happened yet and that could be years before that happens. So it's just way too little of a body of work at osu for me to say he should be the guy to take the job. We pay coordinators a mil these days. We can go get a proven guy that's getting it done in all facets currently with already proven results.
