STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy is joining his former head coach and some of his teammates in the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame as the induction class for 2021 was announced on Jan. 20 by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
Besides Gundy, former OU women’s basketball star Stacey Dales, former OU All-American and NFL player Robert Kalsu, former Wichita State baseball coach Gene Stephenson, former Oklahoma Christian men’s basketball coach Dan Hays, and former NCAA and NFL official Roy Clymer were all announced as inductees. The ceremony that will officially welcome the six new members of the Hall of Fame will be in August.
Mike Gundy is the winningest football coach in Oklahoma State history. He has a record of 137-67 over his 16 seasons as head coach including an 8-3 mark this past season and his team defeated No. 18 Miami, Fla. in the Cheez-It Bowl 37-34. Gundy is 10-5 now in bowl games and he has bowl wins over the likes of Alabama, Stanford, Washington, Virginia Tech, and Miami, Fla.
Gundy has taken the program to 15 bowl games overall, four New Year’s Six bowls and to the Big 12 Championship in 2011.
As a player Gundy was the school’s and the Big Eight’s all-time leading passer and total offense leader. His name is still prevalent in the school’s record books although some of his player’s he coached have passed many of his marks. He took over as starting quarterback as a freshman and led Oklahoma State to wins in the Sun Bowl over West Virginia and the Holiday Bowl over Wyoming. He played alongside some of the greatest players in Oklahoma State history in Hart Lee Dykes, Barry Sanders, and Thurman Thomas and behind the offensive line known as the “War Pigs.”
Gundy started coaching at Oklahoma State for his college coach Pat Jones and moved onto coach at Baylor and Maryland before returning as offensive coordinator for Les Miles and then took over as head coach when Miles left for LSU in 2005.
Gundy was raised by his parents, Ray and Judy, in Midwest City and led the Bombers at Midwest City High to a 1985 State Championship. His sister Kari was also a standout athlete. His brother Cale played quarterback at Oklahoma and has been a long-tome coach on the Sooners football staff.
Gundy is married to his childhood sweetheart Kristen and they have three sons, Gavin, Gunnar, and Gage.
