John Smith: "If you're getting beat by guys ranked 15th, maybe you need to be replaced"

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State’s scheduled triangular for wrestling this Friday in Colorado has been changed because of COVID-19 as No. 20 Northern Colorado has halted team activities and cancelled their participation on Friday as they were set to wrestle Oklahoma State at 4 p.m. and then the Cowboys would wrestle Air Force in Greeley, Colo. at 6 p.m. The Cowboys will still travel to Colorado, but they will go to Colorado Springs instead and wrestle the Air Force Academy at 6 p.m. Both schools, UNC and Air Force are wrestling only members of the Big 12 Conference.

Wrestling has multiple rankings from Intermat to Amateur Wrestling News to Coaches rankings to the NCAA Division 1 rankings, which came out today. In the team rankings Oklahoma State (4-0) is currently ranked No. 5 with Iowa (1-0) on top, Michigan (3-0) and Penn State (0-0) are tied at second. North Carolina State (3-0) is ranked right ahead of the Cowboys.

There are more individuals being ranked at each weight class and Cowboys head coach John Smith was asked about some of the rankings. Smith made it very clear what he thinks about the expanded rankings.

“You’ve got to beat them,” Smith said of wrestlers ranked in the teens. “I don’t know … We used to not recruit that deep and we didn’t even recognize 15th. Now we recognize it? What’s 15th? Fifteenth means you didn’t even place at nationals. Anybody (ranked) 15th we should be beating. We shouldn’t even have anybody ranked 15th and it they are then they need to kick it in and move forward.”

Of course, some of the Cowboys own wrestlers are ranked outside the top eight and some are wrestlers that will almost certainly end up placing and being All-Americans later this season at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis. The Cowboys three freshmen starters that are all unbeaten are currently climbing the rankings.

Weight Class Oklahoma State Wrestler Air Force Wrestler
125 #22-Trevor Mastrogiovanni, Fr., 4-0 #32-Cody Phippen, Fr., 2-0
133 #1-Daton Fix, So., 0-0, Suspd. til Feb. #21-Jared Van Vleet, Jr., 2-0
141 #6-Kaid Brock, Sr., 4-0 #27-Lenny Petersen, Sr., 1-1
149 #4-Boo Lewallen, Sr., 4-0 none
157 #28-Jalin Harper, So., 3-1 none
165 #4-Travis Wittlake, So., 4-0 none
174 #12-Dustin Plott, Fr., 4-0 #29-Cody Surratt, Sr., 1-0
184 #10-Dakota Geer, Sr., 4-0 none
197 #14-AJ Ferrari, Fr., 4-0 none
285 #26-Austin Harris, Sr., 4-0 none

Smith doesn’t mince words. He wants his wrestlers to understand that being ranked doesn’t mean much especially outside the top eight.

Dustin Plott is a freshman rising rapidly.

“Sometimes you’re wrestling that ranked person and his standing says he isn’t even going to place at nationals,” Smith added. “Go beat someone in the top eight, beat somebody in the top eight and that is what we want to focus on. If you are getting beat by guys that are 15th then maybe you need to be replaced, I don’t know.”

Smith was in a jovial mood and even used an example sitting next to him. It was an example that doesn’t wrestle, but effective.

“Reid’s 15th, oh no, you might be 30th at 149 pounds,” Smith joked with his athletic media relations contact Reid Romine sitting next to him during the Zoom conference.

The Cowboys will head to Colorado and will wrestle Air Force and hope to pick up some extra matches and get some wins and maybe move up the rankings.

When your bar is set high and excellence is an expectation, your team (or whatever organization you're a part of) will be made up of high-level performers. Truth. I love the culture with John Smith, as I did with the teams that Myron Roderick & Tommy Chesbro put on the mat

This is why we need the other Big 12 teams to get better. Iron sharpens iron and all that. The Big 10 provides lots of opportunities to beat guys in the top 8, the Big 12 does not.

actually, I think we need the other Big12 programs to field a team.... we have non-B12 schools just to field a league... and now Fresno folded.

I agree with what both of you said. I think the actual Big 12 teams that are in the conference need to get better, which I think would help develop the rest of the conference. Maybe not persuade schools to create programs, but I think it'll help other teams develop more to compete.

I'm certain this will be an unpopular statement, but at this point, the B12 should just cancel sponsorship as a conf sport, and OSU should list as an independent for wrestling.... it really would not be much different than the cluster that is it now, and would offer OSU much more latitude.

The days of ISU and OU fielding great teams (along with OSU) are long gone.

Agree. ISU and OU haven't been good in so long and I'm sure it all has to do with money. The sport doesn't bring in a ton of revenue, so why continue to feed it. If the Pokes were to leave, the Big 12 (wrestling) folds and they should consider either independent or join the Big 12. Can you imagine every week wrestling Iowa, Ohio State, Penn State, Missouri? Just a random thought, but how fun would that be? For how well John Smith has recruited the past two years, I think it would only go to improve recruiting. Kids want to play/wrestle against the best all the time.

We'll continue our rivalries with Minnesota and Iowa, but it's doubtful we can get yearly duals with several other Big 10 teams. There is plenty in it for us, but not really for them. As I said, they have mandated good competition they don't need to seek it out.

I'm a little more optimistic about Iowa State, they are currently a top 10 team and Dresser had a lot of success at Va Tech.

West Virginia isn't a sleeping giant, but being so close to Ohio and Pennsylvania does give them potential to be much better than they have been if they put effort into it.

OU, I don't know, it seems like they've made two bad hires in a row. Maybe the next one can get it figured out. Obviously they have more funds than most to throw at it if they choose to.

I'd love to see one of the Texas schools in the conference pick it up. Texas would be ideal, but I'd be happy with any of them.
