Oklahoma State Receiver John Paul Richardson Enters Transfer Portal

STILLWATER – Another Oklahoma State starter has entered the transfer portal. Pokes Report has confirmed that Cowboy sophomore receiver John Paul Richardson has entered his name into the transfer portal.

The news was first reported by 247Sports.

This comes exactly one week after the Cowboys’ 24-17 loss to Wisconsin in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, a game in which he was voted a team captain by his teammates. He is the youngest player to be voted captain under Mike Gundy’s term as head coach.

Richardson will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Pokes Report has reached out to multiple sources and according to people close to Richardson and knowledge of the situation state JPR wants to go to a school where he can be the No. 1 receiver option.

His father, Bucky, confirmed Richardson went into the portal and that it was a tough decision.

Richardson makes a play against Texas this season.

Richardson played in all 13 games this past season for the Pokes, hauling in 49 receptions for 503 yards and four touchdowns, including an 83-yard touchdown reception against Iowa State. His 49 receptions and four touchdowns were second-most on the team.

His 90 yards against Iowa State was his season high.

As a true freshman, Richardson played in eight games for the Pokes, and while he wasn’t one of the main contributors, he played a significant role down the stretch. He recorded 21 receptions during the 2021 season for 145 yards and two touchdowns. His season high came in the Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame as he had four receptions for 42 yards.

Richardson marks the 13th OSU player to enter the transfer portal since the end of the regular season, joining Spencer Sanders (QB), Braylin Presley (WR), Eli Russ (OL), Langston Anderson (WR), Dominic Richardson (RB), Jabbar Muhammad (CB), Mason Cobb (LB), Kanion Williams (S/ST), Thomas Harper (DB), Demarco Jones (DB/ST), Trace Ford (DE) and Na’Drian Dizadare.

Coming into the program out of the portal is Washington State wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling, with OSU having sent out multiple other portal offers as well. Out of the 2023 signing class, OSU added WR/Ath Camron Heard out of Furr HS in Houston, TX.

This doesn't taste well. Richardson is one of the best clutch receivers on the team.

I am sorry for us....OSU....as he was clutch. Not sure what is going on but this is another quality loss of a very good player and Captain. Good luck unless you line up on the other side. Thanks for your time at OSU. Next Cowboy up if there is one. GO POKES!!!

I have a sneaky suspicion where this comes from! His Dad Bucky was a two year starting QB at Texas A&M in the 1990s! They didn't really recruit him when he came out of high school in Ft. Bend, but old Jimbo figured out he was a damn good player the last couple of years and they may be throwing some serious NIL cash $$$$$$$$$$$$ to get him to come to dads alma mater! I will admit there have been some surprises for me regarding this portal and NIL business as I was sure Spencer would be much sought after but it isn't looking that way so far!!!!!!

This is unsettling. JPR seemed to embody the "Cowboy Culture." Count me as a believer in Gundy but these have been the most disconcerting 60 days for OSU football in the last 15 years. The 60 days of the 2021 season could have been have been as dark (we narrowly won our first three games against inferior opponents) but finally clicked and, other than a questionable spot in a 3 point loss tat ISU and an inch in the 2nd Baylor game without a healthy Warren we would have been 14-0.

We lost that momentum. We can get it back - TCU was 3-7 to end 2021, including a 63-17 loss to OSU, but it is hard to paint a rosy picture at this point.

Also, check out Lincoln Riley's post game presser after USC collapsed to lose to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. I found it interesting that he was asked about possible coaching changes and, specifically, about his DC. He calmly deflected the question and talked about his seniors, etc.

Re Spencer, what if he had a lot of interest and plans to announce he will join a team that is still playing but will lose its QB after the team's season ends?

They have totally messed up what was a great sport. College football will look back in 5 years and realize what they let happen too what was the best college sport. What a mess. OSU better pay up or get out. Playing the we follow the rules game will not cut it.

Could be a number of reasons for this. Tampering maybe but unlikely A&M is interested and why would he want to head there. Worse offense than ours. My guess and it's a guess is that we are looking at sticking with inexperienced qb's and he got a taste of that the last two games. Just didn't want to wait on a rebuilding year. The other thing is how we are currently looking for receivers. The length and skill of Stribling and the recent offer, allows some outside receivers to move inside along with the emphasis on recruiting bigger receivers for blocking and the emphasis on recruiting Tight ends for the same. Looks like a business decision to me. From a skill standpoint, he can be replaced but I loved how he played the game. Lots of heart.

Gee I don't know maybe he spent all his years growing up cheering for and going to A&M games along with his mother and father who are A&M graduates and whose father was a multi year starter for them at QB in the 1990s and is seeing the possibility of being able to cash in a little bit, don't kid yourself all these kids have a representative of some sort looking out for their interests in this new NIL world, be it mom and dad or an outside person!

If he had a lot of interest you would here about it in the press and on social media!!! I have heard Auburn and Ole Miss but the Ole Miss thing seems to be fading away!

Sad, we prioritized a veteran player with significant drop rates. Loyalty can really screw things up when it's more important than winning.

That would require loyalty. Not saying he isn't going to A&M but my guess it's more about production potential than loyalty. A&M is bad on offense with 5 star kids every where. We shall see.

Unfortunately for us HE IS PROBABLY BETTER THAN ALL THOSE 5 Stars who lead them to a 5 - 7 record with a bloated overpriced payroll that would make even the Biden Administration shake their head!!!

He's crapping on all his teammates who just voted him to be a captain. And as a sophomore no less. So I don't have much respect for him, nor do I believe he embodies the "Cowboy Culture".

He isn't as good and they can't throw it so it doesn't matter. In my opinion, he is a baller but not in the top 5 in talent on our team as a receiver. I love him because of effort and leadership. We are deep at receiver but we need someone that can get it to them. The other thing is, we need blocking receivers. They were terrible at this more than not. We are going to fix the run game as evidence by recruiting priorities.

Now Aggie tradition and support for each other runs deep. It would not surprise me if he goes there but it's not the best move for him in my opinion. I just don't see it but if he does I'll gladly admit I'm wrong.

All good thoughts. And I agree on "blocking". And a better run game would sure help our passing game.

One word, PRODUCTION, HE PRODUCES RESULTS! Wish him the best but we best move on!

A&M was ravaged by portal transfers (25 the last time I checked, maybe more by now), and they had a dismal season with their very high $ coach. I would not be surprised if he turned up there.

Well I'm not sure where he might end up, but it sounds like he wants to be a primary outside receiver, and that wasn't going to happen here.

Now it's being reported Bryson Green has entered portal now as well

That's not how it works, Rob.... YOU need to pay up. YOU, ME, WE.... the fans/boosters.

We all must take ownership, or keep our mouths shut. OSU cannot do it. It is done through collectives and DONATIONS, not through OSU.

the Dog Worshipers had 25 kids (last count) enter the portal... they need help now.

I'm not saying that is a factor in his decision, but that the Collies are in tremendous turmoil.

RE: Richardson, my guess is he knows our offense, and knows we don't throw the ball, and he's looking for a team/coach that is more wide-open.... with a strong-armed QB. OSU does not have one of those.

So there is that.
