Armstrong Stays in ACC and Chooses NC State, Cowboys Continue to Look

STILLWATER – The Brennan Armstrong watch is now over as Armstrong is headed to North Carolina State to join back up with the offensive coordinator that most contributed to his success at Virginia in Robert Anae. Armstrong was Oklahoma State’s number one choice. The staff is still determined to bring in an older quarterback to work alongside red-shirt freshman Garret Rangel, incoming freshman Zane Flores, Gunnar Gundy, and the two walk-on quarterbacks on the current roster.

Pokes Report inquired and were informed that any quarterback added will have to be down to one-year of eligibility. The quarterbacks left on the transfer portal that fit that bill includes

Tristan Gebbia, 6-3, 200, Oregom State/Nebraska/Calabasas, Calf.

Pokes Report
Gebbia against Oregon.

Gebbia was a red-shirt as a freshman at Nebraska in the 2017 season. He trsnsferred to Oregon State. Gebbia actually played against Oklahoma State in the game at Corvallis in 2019 when he completed 3-of-7 passing for 30-yards and a touchdown in the 52-36 loss to the Cowboys.

Gebbia has completed 128-of-200 passing in his career for 1,250-yards and hitting at 64 percent. He had five touchdowns and four interceptions. There are some other quarterbacks that fit the Cowboys prerequisites and we will spotlight more of those.

Many of the older quarterbacks in the portal have committed such as Sam Hartman to Notre Dame, J.T. Daniels to Rice, Graham Mertz to Florida, Grayson McCall back to Coastal Carolina, Kedon Slovis to BYU, North Texas Austin Aune is 29-years-old and was offered by OSU but he has declared for the NFL Draft. Phil Jurkovec was at Boston College and is now at Pittsburgh.

Some reports have suggested that the Cowboys try to take back Spencer Sanders, who went into the portal. He did speak with head coach Mike Gundy and the decision was made for Sanders and Oklahoma State to part.

Sanders is reportedly looking at Auburn, Ole Miss, and Missouri.

Oklahoma State has about 14 days to find a quarterback and get them on campus.

Give it to me straight Robert, we're screwed aren't we. How did we reach this point? Without a competent, experienced QB, we'll be lucky to get to 5 wins. It's literally down to one guy who couldn't even start at Oregon State?

And are we ever going to hear anything from Mike Gundy or University leadership about what an unmitigated disaster this off-season has been? Do they care at all that the fan base has basically reached DEFCON 5?

Honestly I'm not sure any of the guys left are worth bringing in for anything other than depth. Better to move forward with what we have and let them learn. Sanders started as a RSFrosh, so I just don't see the issue. We'll win what we win.

Bring Sanders back because, with no program picking him up, his best bet for the NFL is to have a stellar season here. Finish a masters degree, if there is no NFL future, then get into regular life.

Zane Flores. If Robert's opinions concerning ZF are correct then he will be the horse we ride for the next 4 years. Gundy him self was a freshmen QB as was SS.. I think about the Iowa State freshman, Brock Purdy, that came in in relief and lit us up. If Flores is as advertised, then we should be ok. We have talent all around him plus a commitment to run the ball will only help. Like so many of you, I would have left the door open for Spencer but standing firm on principle well prove it the long term to have been the proper course..

Alan Bowman? He's perfect for our offense. This will be his 6th year.

Dugan at TCU came in as a freshman in the second or third game in 2019. Purdy at Iowa State in 2018, his first start he beat us at the Boone, Williams at OU in 2021. Morton at Texas Tech started by game 3 as a true freshman, including against us, until he got hurt in game 9! Heck Ewers at Texas came in last January from Ohio State and was their starter from game one as a freshman! As the old saying goes, If the dog is going to bite, he will bite as a pup! My guess is they are probably looking hard at this QB from Oregon State since Robert brought up his name and you know where Robert gets his info from.

I realize this site doesn't believe in anything off social media, however, a lot has been true. Based on social media (last night), sanders has committed to Auburn. So count him out for coming back....

Either him or maybe Hank Bachmeier who left Boise in September? Seems like either would be way better options than the Oregon St guy.

Alan Bowman is probably our best bet right now… sadly

GG can play and will stay. The day ZF is named the starter be ready for GR to hit the portal when it opens. Need to find a one and done and keep developing walk-ons. The days of someone hanging around for years is probably over unless you have a strong connection to the program. Time will tell. GO POKES!!!

I'd rather have Flores and Rangel. It would be a shame to bring a guy in on his last year to prove something and either his job gets taken or he holds back someone better than him because the coaches won't make the change mid season.

"Oklahoma State has about 14 days to find a quarterback and get them on campus."

That's a little bit melodramatic, isn't it Robert?

I suppose that you're talking about the Feb Signing date? (or that the Spring Semester starts soon)?

But there is a May portal date, which would give transfers all summer and Fall to acclimate. Transferring in Summer might not be ideal, but heck if we need it, then it's better than only having 14 days to panic. Graduate transfers can enter the portal at any time, and if a coach gets fired, then those players have 30 days to enter the portal.

It would seem more prudent to wait for the best fit, than panic and take anybody on the current list, if they aren't better than what we already have.

Do players have to transfer during the new windows?

No. The windows are meant for players to enter their names into the portal, which is different from actually transferring. Once their name is in the portal, they can transfer whenever they want as long as they are able to gain admissions and meet academic requirement dates.

Seems many are willing to trade a silver dollar for a shiny new penny.

I'll stick with 4* Dallas 6a phenom and National Honor Society smart Garrett Rangel that's been on campus 12 months soaking up the offense and pumping iron in the Glass Factory. With Gunnar and SS out of the way, he'll have 9 months of full 1st team snaps to prep for 2023 kick-off against C Ark, ASU, and So. Bama.

Why would we recruit 4 star QB's if we don't intend to use them? Ah, Shiny Penny Logic...
TUSKAPOKE
How long do you want to ignore this user?
IMO....OSU had a 4 star QB in John Kolar and he never saw the field. GR was a 4 star and has had three starts, including many first team reps in prep for the G-bowl, and those starts are three losses. ZF has NFL arm talent. Getting a veteran in here to allow more development of the young QBs would not hurt. GO POKES!!!

Rangel showed he is far from being ready. Both from a body and skill standpoint. It would be a Herculean effort for him to get this current roster to bowl eligibility based on what he showed. Another year will benefit him and Flores.
OT

I clicked thru KU, WVU, and Wis games to check out Rangel.
WVU we had JPR go 5 of 11 and Bray Johnson go 4 of 11 catches to targets. Not all were m perfect but many were simple drops (yes, even JPR).
In KU and Wisc games, our OLine couldn't block 3 or 4 pass rushers, leaving ever receiver in double coverage.
Regarding Sanders, he often had the same defensive coverages.
Rangel is likely more than fine. Establish a decent run game then let's check him out.
Legally-Lit
How long do you want to ignore this user?
There were a number of times it was blocked up and he missed wide open throws. He showed some accuracy issues in the wisc game I don't remember seeing in his film. Also he had a really tough time reading the defense. Another year would benefit him imo.
CProc7
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think some of Rangel's issues came from mostly being young and his first couple times he played Sanders was questionable right up to the game so he might not have got the reps he needed. A full off season and he will be fine.
OT
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Agree that Rangel missed some throws.

I personally don't think our OLine is good enough to evaluate a QB's performance. This also goes for Sanders' interception rates. Throwing in to man coverage AND cover 2 AND DE/LB zone is a very very low percentage affair.

The one thing Sanders brought is the "keep the D at home" run threat, and he was still a run threat. Wouldn't expect Rangel or Flores (or walk-on Parker) to do that, but they might be quicker to read, more accurate, faster release passers give us an even better threat. And they're all athletic enough to grab 15 yards if given the hole.

what exactly did Sanders "pull" last season? Play injured? yeah beat on him for that.

Robert already reported that Gundy has told he through Glass that no, he may not return.

I don't blame the coaches, they have put too much time in to moving on without him (practice, recruiting) to now say, oh we don't have faith in our program, will you please come back and save our careers. Sanders has never ever played every game of the season anyway, so we would certainly be playing games without him and have to rely on the kids we have. It's time to put the energy into moving toward the future..

Spencer told the staff he was going to the draft after the season. Gunnar didn't have to have surgery immediately so they asked if he planned to play through the bowl season before proceeding. After Gunnar has surgery Spencer told them he was not going to play anymore leaving only 1 qb available. Spencer then told them he was hitting the portal..

wink, wink, wink.

If Gunnar needed surgery, then he wouldn't have been worth much anyway. Come on man. Move on.

Oh, poor OSU.... Wisconsin played without their starting QB too. Heck, lots of kids declared and didn't play, I wonder what they "pulled"?

Do you honestly believe that had any affect at all on Gundy's decision to not allow Sanders back? Seriously?

come on with the conspiracy nonsense already.

OMG! Why didn't you say so! He did that to US? He exercised his right to get additional advice and he changed his mind? OMG!

How could anybody ever do that to us? After 5 years of being injured, giving his all, and playing injured... for us.... he turned around and did that to us? Oh the outrage! Oh the betrayal!

Banish him from Stillwater ever more.

come on man... SMH
