STILLWATER – Oklahoma State stunned No. 12 Iowa State in a thriller of a game, 61-59. It marks the second-straight win for the Pokes and their first top-25 win of the season.

With the win, the Cowboys move to 11-8 on the season and 3-4 in Big 12 play.

Avery Anderson III led the way for the Pokes with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. He recorded five assists and three blocks. He did, however, recorded eight of the Pokes’ 16 turnovers.

Kalib Boone posted 13 points on 4-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

John-Michael Wright finally broke out of his multi-game slump as he posted eight points on 3-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-4 from the free throw line. Caleb Asberry and Woody Newton led the way in rebounds with six apiece.

As a team, the Cowboys shot 44% from the field, including 43% from 3-point range. They did, however, struggled mightily from the free throw line as they went 16-of-28.

The Cyclones led the day in rebounds, 39-31, including a 15-6 clip on the offensive end, as well as outscored the Pokes in the paint, 38-14.

It was a rough start to the game for the Pokes as they hit just two field goals and one free throw in the first eight minutes of play.

Caleb Asberry with a big three at 11:18 to make it 19-8, which ended a near-three-minute scoring drought for the Pokes. Moussa recorded a steal, which nearly led to a fast break three from Asberry. As it happened, the Pokes kept possession.

The Pokes showed from signs of life at the 8:26 mark with two quick buckets from Kalib Boone, which was followed by a big three from Woody Newton, which was then followed by a Cyclone foul on Avery Anderson III, with him sinking both buckets, cutting the deficit to just nine, 27-18.

Newton recorded a steal on the trip back down the court, leading to a foul on Asberry, who unfortunately missed the front end of a one-and-one.

The Pokes entered the double bonus at the 4:15 mark of the first half, with Chris Harris Jr. sinking both free throws to cut ISU’s lead down to eight, 31-23.

OSU finished the half a near-three-minute scoring drought, trailing the Cyclones by 10, 35-25.

The Cyclones outrebounded the Pokes 24-17 in the first half, while also outscoring them in the paint, 26-8.

The second half, however, was a much different story in multiple facets, as have been several games this season for the Pokes.

Caleb Asberry was sent into the game following Bryce Thompson going down with an apparent left leg injury at the 17:55 mark of the second half. Less than a few minutes later, he drilled a huge 3-pointer to cut the Cyclones’ lead to six, 43-37.

The Cyclones hit a bucket out of the media timeout following a defensive deflection by Asberry, which was immediately answered by a 3-pointer by John-Michael Wright, his first bucket of the game.

The Cowboys trailed by as many as 16 points at the eight-minute mark of the first half. Wright hit a midrange jumper, his third-straight bucket, to tie the game up at 45 with 12:17 left in the game.

The scoring dried up for the Pokes shortly thereafter as they’d go on a near-five-minute scoring drought, turning the ball over four times during that stretch. They trailed the Cyclones by five, 50-45, with 7:48 left. Woody Newton ended that drought with a big 3-pointer from the wing, the Pokes’ eight of the game, cutting the deficit to just two, 50-48.

A corner three by Anderson III cut that deficit to just one, 52-51, with 6:16 remaining in the game, following two free throws by the Cyclones. Two more free throws by Anderson III at the three-minute mark gave the Pokes’ their first lead of the game, 55-54.

Boone gave the Pokes a three-point lead, 57-54, with a ferocious dunk, with the Cyclones tying it up on the way back down the court with a big corner three from Kalscheur. Anderson III, however, had other plans and put the Pokes back up two, 59-57, with one minute remaining in the game.

Osunniyi missed two free throws with :31.6 left, with Woody Newton bringing down the rebound. The Pokes successfully called a timeout to keep possession. Asberry was fouled on the inbounds play, sending him to the line, where he made the front end, putting the Pokes up three, 60-57, with :27 left.

The Cyclones hit a bucket on the other end, 60-59, with :17 remaining before calling their final timeout of the game.

Anderson III traveled on the inbounds play to give the Cyclones the ball back with :13 left. Tre King had a good look from three, but the Cowboys were able to come down with the rebound following the miss. King picked up his fifth foul of the day, sending Newton to the line, who hit the first of two, putting the Pokes back up two, 61-59.

Cisse left the game following the scrum for that last rebound as he was limping gingerly on his left foot.

Next up for the Pokes is a road game against Texas on Tuesday, January 24.
