Jamison Mejia Makes It Known, He's a Cowboy
STILLWATER – His official visit took place Jan. 26-28, his decision was made on Jan. 29, but Jamison Mejia’s desire to be at Oklahoma State started sometime in early 2022 and carried on through football camp at Oklahoma State last summer. It actually became official today, if you are reading this on signing day Feb. 1
“I’m glad I finally got the opportunity to be an Oklahoma State Cowboy,” Mejia told me by phone on Sunday (Jan. 29). “I’ve told the coaches and I plan on making it public on signing day.”
Mejia talked about being happy to be on his visit and being an honorary Cowboy for a few days, but going into the official visit for the 6-5, 280-pound offensive tackle from Broken Arrow that was all it was going to be.
He had his mind set on Oklahoma State but the Cowboys kept flirting. They stayed in touch and insinuated an offer was coming soon, but that kept going. Mejia had offers from Tulsa, Tulane, South Florida, and Navy among others and then the University of Virginia offered and he went on his official visit. Oklahoma State came through with their offer just before his UVA visit, but Mejia came back impressed with the Cavaliers.
“Yes, I was set on Virginia,” he said. “Oklahoma State was going to have to prove it to me. The visit was food and they convinced and proved to me that this is a family and that it is the opportunity that I wanted.”
Watching Mejia, I was a big fan going back. He is big, but he is mobile, almost like a tight end in a bigger frame. He really excels in blocking on the move whether it is outside for a perimeter screen play or coming across in a “dart” pull and getting to the edge player on the other side of the line. He is good on pin and pull tactics, but he is also good straight on.
One of his most impressive highlights is what I like to call the o-line cycle. He blocks a lineman on defense and then moves to the second level and put a linebacker down and then with the play still live gets to the third level and blocks a corner trying to close in.
As for heading to Oklahoma State.
“In football I think I will red-shirt and then I want to compete to start the next season. I know I want to be 290-pounds by the time I get there,” he said.
“Academic, I’m thinking sciences,” Mejia added. “I want to do something with the sciences and business. I may get into something culinary.”
His senior season at Broken Arrow didn’t end the way he wanted it to. They finished 5-7 with a win over Norman in the playoffs before losing to Tulsa Union in semifinals in Class 6A-I. He did make the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State team.
“I just played as hard as I could,” Mejia said. “My grandpa told me that I could make it. I’m proud of that.”
I think both Mejia and Oklahoma State will be happy and proud that they ended up with each other.
