Mike Gundy Details Being Requested by Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff
STILLWATER – Last Friday (April 7) Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy was in a staff meeting with his coaches watching spring football video when he noticed his phone kept ringing. “I looked at it and it was Danielle (Clary),” Gundy said of his administrative assistant. “She doesn’t call me in a football meeting unless it is important or it’s family. I started thinking what’s wrong?”
Gundy called Clary and she asked why he wasn’t answering his phone. Gundy explained he was meeting with staff and was wondering what’s up.
“The President is trying to get ahold of you,” Clary said.
“I joked and said what, ‘does she want to fire me?’” Gundy recounted.
Gundy said Clary explained the President had a guest that wanted to meet him. The Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff was in town along with the Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm to announce a seven-million dollar grant to Oklahoma State University to continue research and training for energy conservation in manufacturing.
Emhoff, married to Vice-President Kamala Harris, was on the trip with Secretary Granholm. It turns out that he is a big college football fan and wanted to meet Gundy.

“I went over there and had to go through all the Secret Service stuff,” Gundy said. “I thought I was going to be over there (waiting 45) minutes or more, but then I got tapped on the shoulder and this Secret Service agent said the Second Gentleman would like to see you now.”
Gundy said Emhoff, an attorney by education with a degree from the USC Gould School of Law, knew his stuff.
“He knew all about me and he asked all the questions,” Gundy said, “He wanted to know about things in my career and he either studied up or he really watches a lot of college football. he told me, ‘In the fall all I do is watch college football.’”

It turns out the two men are close in age. Gundy is 55-years-old and Emhoff is 58-years-old.
“I told him that maybe we could help each other,” Gundy jokes again. “I said if he had some plays then he could give them to me and we’d use them and then I could go down there and help the Vice-President with immigration. Dr. Shrum had that laugh, you know the Beavis and Butt-head laugh. I think she was a little nervous, but he laughed. He was a good guy and real down to earth, a football fan.”
