Caleb Etienne Announces His Departure in the Transfer Portal

STILLWATER – The NCAA Transfer Portal window for post spring football opens up on Saturday, April 15 and Oklahoma State already has a player that has announced he will go in it. Offensive left tackle Caleb Etienne, who started all 13 games last season announced on Friday he will be going into the portal. He left a message for “Cowboy Nation” on his Twitter account.

The move was not a surprise to Oklahoma State coaches. Etienne had been in competition for his position during the spring. The transfer in of Dalton Cooper, an All-SunBelt Conference player at Texas State and a native of Prague, Okla. was in part to encourage competition at the tackle position and Cooper was performing well right up until an injury sidelined him for the rest of spring. He is expected back for the summer workouts and ready for the upcoming season. In addition to Cooper, true freshman Jack Endean (6-6, 297) has come in and been very impressive and red-shirt freshman Calvin Harvey (6-8, 325) has re-shaped his body and been an impressive performer during the spring. Another tackle candidate is UNLV transfer Noah McKinney (6-5, 317) plus Cole Brimingham (6-5, 325) coming back can pay either guard or tackle.

Etienne celebrates a touchdown last season at Baylor.

To be fair, Etienne was a standout recruit coming out of powerhouse Warren Easton High School in New Orleans, La. He was a starter on their state finals team that went 12-3 as a senior.

He ended up going to junior college at Fort Scott where he was a first-team NJCAA All-American honoree. He transferred to Butler County C.C., which did not play in the fall of 2020 due to COVID. he then graduated and transferred to Oklahoma State, but there was a lot of rust and he needed time to get into playing shape and come back. Etienne did start every game in 2022, but there were times he struggled.

Hopefully, a change of scenery will help his performance. Meanwhile,it give Oklhaoma State a scholarship to use immediately and it is likely that will happen and it will be used on the offensive line. There are some candidates.

He would have been a good back up if not a starter. Sucks to lose someone who has already started almost 15 games for us and trying to finally achieve his potential. Do we know if we already have options there or is it back to the drawing board?

Our Oline gets hit with injury bug every season. Hopefully we have good depth there.

Not sure what you were watching last year or saw all of the missed assignments, but if Caleb started this year we would have been in big trouble again. The writing was on the wall with him, he most likely would have been 3rd team with no chance of starting.

Spot on! Wish him the best in his future but it was to the point that he was not going to surpass Cooper and even Endean, who is the most accomplished FRESHMAN O lineman since Teven Jenkins, was probably going to pass over him by the beginning of next season!!!

How badly is D Cooper hurt? What was his injury?

There was a lot of missed assignments for sure. But I heard most of them were because of the bad LG who was making the job of Etienne tough. And towards second half of season Etienne was one of the highest rated Olinemen for us.

You maybe right on grading out but that would surprise me. I just saw too many missed assignments. Like Robert said, I think he was going to have a hard time making the 2 deep roster.

He has a plantair fasciitis issue in one foot (kind of like bone spurs). It's nothing serious but he will probably need to play with the thick padded insole in his game cleats!

Unfortunately the portal hinders top level depth. No way around it and kids would rather leave then compete. Welcome to the new norm. Best of luck to the big guy.
