Woody Newton Enters the Transfer Portal

STILLWATER – Another Oklahoma State basketball player has entered the transfer portal. Junior wing Woody has entered the transfer portal, a source tells Pokes Report.

Newton is the fourth OSU player to enter the transfer portal since the end of the season, joining guard Avery Anderson III and centers Kalib Boone and Moussa Cisse.

A 6-9, 195-pound wing, Newton has spent the previous two seasons in Stillwater after he transferred from Syracuse. He should have two years of eligibility remaining.

This past season as a junior, Newton started in 13 of 29 games, while averaging 4.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. He also recorded seven blocks.

Senior guard John-Michael Wright announced he’s returning to Stillwater for his final season in 2023-24, as did soon-to-be-sophomore guard Quion Williams.

The duo of Tyreek Smith and Bryce Thompson still have eligibility and have yet to make an announcement about next season. They also have the option of entering their names into the transfer portal, though both players transferred to Oklahoma State, Smith from Texas Tech and Thompson from Kansas.

Chris Harris Jr. suffered a third knee injury towards the end of the 2022-23 season. He still has one year of eligibility and the program will honor his scholarship should he decide to return for one more year.

Boynton and Co. also signed five true freshmen in the 2023 signing class: four-star forwards Brandon Garrison (Del City) and Eric Dailey Jr. (IMG Academy), Jamyron Keller (Killeen Ellison), Justin McBride (Plano) and Connor Dow (Broken Arrow).

the continual shrinking roster.... and I'm not talking about numbers, I'm talking about size

Does this feel worse than football?

I didn't see the improvement needed in any player's game this season to take that next step. Only thing this team did consistently was inconsistency. Hard to be a developmental program, when players aren't developing. I'm not a basketball expert, but I just expected more from the talent in the floor. Watching mediocrity is exhausting. Need new Jimmys and Joes. My question is, where are these guys going? They weren't good enough here, so…

Pretty sure the Boone twins are looking closely at UNLV. Cisse and Anderson will land Power 5 no doubt. Newton probably not Power 5 material.

Hard to build a team this way. Hope he has a very strong transfer class. This is not the type of league that you want to start 3-4 freshman.

This is addition by subtraction as far as Newton is concerned. He had attitude issues, he honestly didn't seem very bright, and was not good at basketball.

Doesn't it kinda depend on the size of the "replacement"?

That's the concerning part, we're not seeing these guys get better. EA is trying to go somewhere that he can get the finish he needs to have a chance to be drafted. If Boone winds up at UNLV someone missed out, same with Woody. Cisse was a big loss, but again I'm sure he's looking for draft status progress and wasn't getting it here.

I just hope he finds a point guard, and pulls in another 2 players that can work with those still here to have a better year next year.

Sure wish I was hearing more about coaching moves as someone has to be brought in that can coach fundamentals.

I wish Woody well. He will not be a significant loss however. As stated by others, he did not develop but he really did not get much playing time. As a 6'8" guard, he should have dominated in the post and he didn't. Plus, he did not shoot well.

Out of all the players we lost, Cisse will be missed the most. His defense and rebounding was good. Offensively, he is very limited. He will not make it in the NBA as he is 6'9" at best with no offensive game.
