Cowboys Come Back from Deficit to Handle Northern Iowa, Sheets is impressive
Oklahoma State weathered a pretty hefty storm early against Northern Iowa as they opened a double dip day of wrestling in the state of Iowa inside the West Gym and home of the Panthers. The Pokes lost in that very same gym and on the same purple mat last season 19-15. The Cowboy fell behind early and rallied taking the lead at the near midway mark in the dual with 157-pound Wyatt Sheets exploding for bonus points and a lead Oklahoma State would not relinquish but didn’t distance much either as the Pokes left for dual number two against Iowa State in Ames with a 20-12 win over Northern Iowa
It looked like a repeat early as Penn State transfer and No. 18-ranked Brody Teske handed Cowboy freshman Trevor Mastrogiovanni his first college loss 6-0 at 125-pounds. Teske rode out the entire second period and picked up a four-point near fall in the process. No. 13-ranked Mastogiovanni fell to 6-1 on the season.
Northern Iowa made it 6-0 on the team scoreboard with another shut out at 133-pounds as No. 17-ranked Kyle Biscoglia also used a second period where he rode it out on top and then added a take down to win 3-0 over the Cowboys Reece Witcraft (5-2).
Dusty Hone (4-1) broke through for the Cowboys at 141-pounds with a 4-2 decision. A second period escape and riding time were the difference for Hone over Drew Bennett.
No. 4 Boo Lewallen (14-8) leveled the team score at 6-6 with a 14-8 decision at 149-pounds over Triston Lara of Northern Iowa. After a second period takedown on a double leg move Lewallen led 10-3 and looked like he was moving toward a major decision, but Lara came back with strong third period including a late takedown to make the match closer.
Sheets returned to the starting line-up in a big way and in a monster third period he used a single leg takedown into a figure four to toss Cayd Lara onto both shoulders at separate points collecting first a two-point near fall and then a four-point near fall and a final match score of 15-4 adding in the riding time point. The No- 12-ranked Sheets moved his record to 2-0. Oklahoma State led on the team score 10-6.
No. 4 Travis Wittlake (6-0) copied Sheets at 165-pounds with another major decision. Wittlake used three third period takedowns and the riding time to win 13-4. OSU led 14-6.
No. 17 Dustin Plott kept his collegiate career and freshman mark clean at 6-0 with an 8-5 decision over Lance Runyon of Northern Iowa.
At 184 pounds Dakota Geer lost for the first time this season in sudden victory against unbeaten Panthers wrestler Parker Keckeisen. Keckeisen (6-0) won with a takedown in sudden victory 1 and a 4-2 decision.
The Cowboys closed it out with a decision in their favor and one against No. 14 AJ Ferrari (6-0) stayed unbeaten with by a 10-4 count over former Cowboy Keegan Moore at 197 pounds and then Austin Harris (5-1) lost an 8-2 verdict to No. 11 Carter Isley at heavyweight. Isley beats Harris for the second time in his career and stays unbeaten at 5-0 this season.
