Oklahoma State Lands Commitment From 2024 LB Gunnar Wilson Following Official Visit

June 24, 2023

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State football is on a roll from the back-to-back official visit weekends as they land a commitment from Gunnar Wilson, a linebacker out of Melissa (TX) High School in the 2024 class.

Wilson, who was on his official visit in Stillwater last week, took to social media to make the announcement official.

Checking in at 6-3, 210 pounds, Wilson chose the Cowboys over offers from Arkansas State, Army, Louisiana Tech, North Texas and UTSA among others.

Twitter (https://twitter.com/gunnar_wilson_7)

Wilson already has Oklahoma State ties as his sister is currently a student here in Stillwater. He told Pokes Report that his dad is a Texas A&M fan, and his mom is a Texas fan. Our guess is the Wilson family is going to be cheering full-time for the bright orange Pokes north of the Red River.

The Cowboys and Joe Bob Clements were the first Power Five program to offer Wilson during the May evaluation period following Clements’ trip down to Melissa to see Wilson.

Wilson had a great junior season in 2022 as he earned Texas Sportswriters Association honorable mention All-State honors as a tight end. Wilson was also tabbed first team All-District 7-5A as he helped Melissa to an 11-3 overall record before a 30-16 loss to the eventual Texas 5A state champs, Dallas South Oak Cliff.

Melissa High School

He finished the season with 46 receptions for 452 yards and six touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, the side in which Oklahoma State is interested in, Wilson recorded 42 total tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, two picks, three pass breakups and one forced fumble. What’s impressive about those defensive stats is that he recorded them in just five games due to an injury.

He lined up in several spots on the defense, everything from a seven technique on the outside of the defensive line to both inside and outside linebacker, as well as a little at strong safety. The Cowboys’ defensive unit has been very successful the past handful of years due to recruiting players like Wilson.

Wilson becomes the 10th commitment in the Oklahoma State 2024 recruiting class and he evens up the numbers as he is the fifth commitment on the defensive side and the second linebacker in the class. There are five offensive pledges in the class as well.

Is a an OSU recruiting requirement that a prospect has to have only non-power 5 schools offering him before OSU will make an offer? Or is this just a Gundy era rich tradition of going after guys that the rest of the Power 5 shows no interest in?

No, but apparently it is becoming a reality that morons still can post here.

I don't understand why people get shamed for this opinion. The talent has not been deep enough and good enough for years.

I've Been a major Gundy apologist. He made my time on campus in the 2010s a blast. But in 2023, after numerous winning seasons the talent is not progressing. It's not crazy to ask why the guys we are getting have no other power 5 offers. It's early-ish. So many probably will pick some up. But it's a valid question.

Certainly doesn't make you a moron. Look at the numbers. The teams with more 4 and 5*/nfl caliber talent have been the ones playing for the titles.

This is correct. Recruiting has been an issue for a long time and is only being exacerbated by NIL. That said, Gundy does more with less than most coaches. I would love to see what he could do with some consistent top 25 classes but we will never know.

Right now our last 247 4* player is from 2022 class. I hope we land couple in this class. Landyn has a chance to become 4* and no one else who is committed right now.

Looking longingly at 2022 class when we had 5 4 star players from high school

It's amazing we keep hearing how bad our recruiting is, and of course I'm sure they think UT is doing splendidly. Here's a re-evaluation of the 2019 class now that the results are in, and guess what, UT is out of the ratings while OSU is about where we were. Something tells me our coaches are doing better than the recruiting services.

Two of those, nearly half the four stars left after one year and turned out to be DUDS! CJ Brown and Tyrone Webber are both no longer on the squad, mostly because they couldn't handle Body by Glass!!! Rangel has a chance to be good and Ollie Gordon and Tayln Shettron could be stars! Hell Etienne, the big O lineman that left in the Spring was a top 10 Juco player when he came in the year before and COULDN'T BLOCK AIR!!!

Having 1 or 2 of them every two classes is a lot different from having 4-6 of them. I'd bet you'd see a lot more hits if we got more on campus.

Some of my favorite players ever have been the under recruited. But for evened Malcom or James Washington there's about 5-6 projects that didn't pan out. More blue chip guys is a good thing for any team. I'm afraid our ceiling is only so high with the classes we bring in. Especially when those project guys (mason Cobb, Muhammad) can now pick up and leave without penalty once they put up a big year.

Yeah, ask zero U if they would like to have Caleb Williams or even Spencer Rattler back!!! Both the guys you mentioned left for NIL $$$ but that is the way the game is played these days, we would have been better this past year if Jarrick Bernard-Converse and Tanner McAlister had not left after the 2021 season as both started for LSU and Ohio State respectively!!! The portal taketh away but the portal also giveth!!!

They had 5 star Kelvin Banks (Texas) committed for nine months before Texas brought the $$$$$ and took him away, same with a big kid (4 star guard prospect) back in 2020 who ended up at Texas A&M and left after last season!

That was my point. With the portal and NIL it will be even harder to either 1. Keep the projects that turn blue chip or 2. Keep the projects long enough to develop them. It's been said thousands of times Gundy prefers the guys that have something to prove. That strategy might not lead to as many wins as it did pre-portal.

I agree. Schools like OSU that compete by finding the under the radar guys are the ones being hurt the most by NIL. I'm close to the point of not caring much about college athletics but it's hard to give up on 30+ years of passion. It will happen though and NIL will end up ruining college sports. Good intention plus huge money combined with no oversight =total chaos.

Doesn't matter. The hit rate is still higher with 4 stars than 3. The number of 3 stars who come ready to contribute early is not same as blue chips. For every example of busts at OSU I can give examples of good ones. Tylan Wallace, Dez Bryant, Rudolph, Collin Oliver etc.,

We need Atleast couple of blue chip recruits per season. If we can't even manage that, it's sad situation. We still have time this year, but last year class was not impressive.

Yes, lets do look at the numbers.....

Lots of teams with 4 and 5* have also NOT been playing for the titles (Texas, etc., Aggies, Tenn, etc.)

and I have not heard of TCU and/or Cincinnati as being loaded with 4 and 5* talent, but yet there they were playing for NATIONAL titles

Remember that great Bama team, they played KState in a bowl game... that 5* studded KState team.

yes, can we please look at all the numbers and not simply cherry pick like this

we had SIX 4* recruits in the 2022 class.

we picked up FOUR 4* transfers in the 2023 class...

several of the kids were rated very, very high 3* (.88 or higher)

You will find out how this pokes report forum works if you stick around long enough. If you have concerns about player talent or depth you get shamed. It's been that way for 2-3 years now. It's an argument you'll never get a real answer too these guys will just beat you up about it. You kind of have to be a sunshine pumper in order to not be verbally abused here.

Folks, Gundy/Glass team building is different than Alabama or OU. In fact it's different from Iowa State or K-State. Stillwater and our fan base vs. having OU an hour plus away doesn't match up to some places. Look up ticket sales/.attendance. But regardless, Gundy's system has made OSU the 2nd winningest team in the Big XII over the last 10-15 years. Texas U. which has recruiting advantages and class ratings/"stars"over even OU, has lost to Gundy's system 9 of the last 13 games. I personally think the transfer portal is going to benefit the Gundy system more than hurt it. Hang in their oh pessimists and watch win/losses as your measuring stick, not fake stars.

We are talking about HS recruiting now. Unless OSU decided it's not worth going after HS blue chips and put their energy behind transfer blue chips. Then it's a strategy move and will take couple of years to see if that worked or not.

Atta boy, you finally figured it out, if you see this staff go after and push to get the STARS , it is in the SKILLED PLAYERS that can make a difference!!! Many of the 4 stars this staff gets are heavily skewed towards the skill players or difference makers on offense that you hope perform because they score the points for you! ! Rudolph, Sanders, Rangel at QB! Bowman, Bryant, Tyreek Hill, Wallace, Pressley, Shettron at receiver! Randle, Hill, Hubbard, Gordon at running back!!! You also have the ones nobody really gave much attention to who became stars and played in the NFL such as Hunter at RB, Blackmon at WR, Washington at WR, Weedin at QB, Pettigrew at TE, Z Robinson at QB, and a few others!!! Where my criticism of Mike has been was recruiting on the defensive side of the ball, but they seem to have done better on that side the last couple of years!!!

Ok you call me out for cherry picking and then you do? The KSU and TCUs (and us) of the world are exceptions. (And your example KSU got absolutely embarrassed when they went against a more talented bama team.)

Also you are right, 4 and 5 * don't guarantee titles. Lol we all know that. But look at every team that has won in the past 10 years. Non of them recruit outside of the top 15-20.

I found this online: From 2003-2016 11-14 champions avg a top ten recruiting rating over the preceding 4 years. 5 of the 6 had a t6 class avg or better. (See 247 composite and down south article). I'm sure I can find evidence that is consistent from 2017-2023.

I know that t20 is not a reasonable ask for an OKsT. But better than T35, seems more than reasonable.

I will die on the hill that if you gave Gundy a roster like Jimbo has - he would have gotten A&M a title. He and his staff are so good. But I think he's content with his diamonds in the rough though. And it's frustrating.

I'd love to see a detailed recruiting plan that would deliver and retain "better" recruits than we've either historically, or are currently getting. Alas, anyone griping about recruiting without a realistic different plan is just engaging in pointless griping.

I was including my comments as cherry picking, to better make the point.

As much as I think Gundy had been very good for OSU, I think he would find a way to lose games that he shouldn't even with Jimbo's roster.... likely start the wrong QB too, right? Isn't that the common complaint? Or, too predictable on the play calling. Right?

We should be looking forward, not back.... we can't change what is past.

Gundy and Co with 4* heavy roster is dangerous.

I'm not looking back. I'm looking forward and hoping for progression in talent level.
