Chauncey Johnson Commits to Oklahoma State on Official Visit

June 24, 2023

STILLWATER – Lonoke, Ark. sits about 20 miles east of Little Rock, Ark. and is a little closer to the Mississippi border than it is to the Arkansas-Oklahoma line. When Lonoke defensive line coach Xavier Flowers drove Chauncey Johnson to the Down and Dirty Linemen Camp at Oklahoma State back on June 13 little did he know where it would lead.

Robert Allen - Pokes Report
Johnson in one-on-one at Down and Dirty Camp.

Johnson had a strong camp showing that he was not only agile, but a very powerful 6-4.5 and 288-pound blocker. Johnson could have participated in the camp on defense as he plays both ways at Lonoke High School. He picked the right side of the ball. He was unbeaten in one-on-one and showed the results of picking up wrestling the past year and how it improved his footwork and his leverage.

He had offers coming to the camp from Missouri and Southeast Missouri with Arkansas State and Memphis picking up their recruitment of him. Earlier this week, Oklahoma State offered and by Thursday with his boss at his summer job being gracious enough to let him off work, he was on his way to Stillwater on an official visit.

It went well as we learned that Johnson committed to the Cowboys on Friday night after dinner. He did not even wait until his final meeting with Coach Gundy on Saturday morning.

Last season he had 17 tackles on defense and a sack. On offense he was busy blocking for the Jack Rabbits fairly balanced offense. They ran for 2006-yards averaging 5.7-yards a carry and they threw for 1,699-yards and averaged 8.45-yards a pass attempt. Lonoke finished 6-5, 4-2 in district and lost a heartbreaker 21-14 in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Johnson becomes the ninth commitment for Oklahoma State in the 2024 recruiting class. He is the sixth on the offensive side of the football. He joins Caleb Hackleman from Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas as the second offensive lineman in the class.

An easy choice for the kid to make considering the low level schools that also offered. It might be hard to hold onto him going forward as the Power 5 schools take another look at him next season. NIL money rules. Why do we even have to still call it NIL? It's just plain old payola money disguised as a new term.

Mr. Positive. We always have issues with potential hidden gems. We will stay on him.

There hasn't been many "hidden gems" up front. I understand people's frustration. We seem to only get projects to commit.

Two four star juncos, the first Etienne in 2021 and Webber in 2022 and both are gone! Webber couldn't handle the Glass workout routine and Etienne, well we all witnessed last season at left tackle!!!

Both those guys were also projects. Et. Was slow as molasses and heavy. And Weber was way undersized. Either way, the OL recruiting has been probably the worst position group. Yet here we are with another year of Dickey with 2 former walk-ons projected to start. Hope Dickey gets it together

We're going to be stuck with Dickey for as long as Gundy wants him around. OL has to prove a lot this year for me to be convinced.

or, we're stuck with him as long as his OLines keep on producing.

Dickey's players have earned at least one All-Big 12 honor every season since his arrival, including Marcus Keyes in 2019, Teven Jenkins and Josh Sills in 2020, Sills again in 2021 and Hunter Woodard in 2022. All but one of those were first team honors. In the five years before Dickey, OSU earned just three total first team all-conference spots on the offensive line.

Dickey's 2022 offensive line was penalized just 13 times on the season, greatly contributing to the team ranking No. 1 in the FBS in fewest penalties. It was also part of a top-20 passing offense in the FBS and Hunter Woodard earned second team All-Big 12 honors from the AP, despite missing the final six games to injury. (The line really struggled last year after Woodward went down)

In 2021, Dickey coached a unit that saw three players step into an everyday starter role and nine different players make at least one start. Even with the movement, the offensive line paved the way for an offense that controlled the pace of the game and moved the ball effectively. In conference games only, OSU ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 in rushing offense, No. 2 in total offense and No. 3 in scoring offense. Sills was first team All-Big 12.

Dickey's 2020 offensive line lost two starters in the season opener and was without seven different players at one point in the year. Despite shockingly hard luck with injuries, Dickey continually shuffled the lineup on a unit that helped the Cowboys rank among the Big 12's top four teams in both rushing offense and passing efficiency. The 2020 line also produced two first All-Big 12 picks in Jenkins and Sills.

OL has been an issue every year since 2013. Individual Accolades or not, It's been below average. It's a testament to The offense and Gundy for being able to scheme around the massive talent deficiencies up front. I give a bit of pass for the last 2 years due to health. But theres no depth. We have too many guys that aren't P5 level in the ranks.

Also I give Jalen Warren massive credit for 2021. SS too. I believe avgs were pretty poor that year right? We pounded the ball and relied on our defense. Jalen Warren made something out of nothing most of the time.

you keep making those baseless statements, and I keep showing showing you the actual facts.

it is a travesty when folks get so indoctrinated in their own bias and beliefs that they are no longer able to accept rational and factual commentary.

whatever "P5 level means", I would not want many of the recent KU OLines, and we've had OLinemen transfer to Houston, Texas Tech, BYU, San Diego State (and start).

I watched the Central Michigan OLine tear our DLine up.

Our OLine DID NOT NEED A PASS the past two years, we played for the conference championship one of those years, and were tearing it up this past year until Woodward went down... and that was without decent RB.

We had a couple of JUCO/Transfer busts last year, that greatly impacted our depth (in addition to the 2 that transferred to Tech and SDSU)

We need to do better, but we're not very far off. We did struggle greatly trying to work though the mess that was left by past OLine coaches Connelly, Adkins and Hansen, but we're pretty much back now.

Jalen Warren is a Pro, I don't know if he made something out of nothing, but he always found the hole, he had good vision, balance and footwork. Hubbard was good too, fast anyway, same with Hill.

When we don't have a decent RB, then too many folks are quick to blame the OLine.

Hopefully our RBs this year are really good... at least we have some guys with experience now, and the changes to more bodies at the point of attack should help some too.

isn't "pounding the ball" what we're hoping for? you almost make it sound like it's a bad thing.

anyway... our OLine this year is looking pretty darn good, if we can keep them together by September... and on top of that the youth look talented and deep.

Contemplate this perhaps. Our basketball staff recruits seemingly/supposedly top 10 classes and can't finish in the national top 40 in winning programs. Our football staff seemingly/supposedly recruits in the 30's and 40's nationally at best.....and averages about top 15 win/loss results nationally. Why push to remove any staff in Gundy's group?

I get it. There's a constant battle between the fans that want progression and the fans that are happy with top 25ish. We've won one b12 title since we started really pouring into football with Boones help in 2006.

I don't expect CFP every year. But we need to cross that b12 title line more. We've been there. But that's not good enough for a large number of fans. The belly positions are where programs like ours have really gotten behind the blue bloods.

I don't want to go back and forth on this. It's useless. But You say you are presenting the factseh. Pointing to one all-conference OLineman per year and then arguing that is somehow evidence of adequate OL play from the unit is tenuous at best.

Additionally, arguing we are discipline (penalties) and the "t20 pass offense" argument in re: 2022 OL is weak also. Looking at yardage stats (good or bad) does not necessarily tell the story of OL play.

Moreover, assuming the teams overall success means each part of the team performed well or even adequately is fallacious reasoning. You can have a flawed OL room and still win games and play for championships. Especially when one of those teams had one of the best defenses in CFB history.

Evaluating OL requires looking at tape and evaluating each play. As a former OL, when I rewatch games on dvr, I watch OL and the DL. If you look at the tape, you'll see stalemates, guys getting beat off the line, missed assignments, lack of physicality etc. Quantifying that with stats is tough.

I'll elaborate on my p5 comment. IMO, Michalski, Miterko, Etienne, and Springfield should not have been playing as much as they have. To me, they are not Power 5 starting caliber. Hate to say that bc Springfield and Michalski play hard. And have improved. But they should be depth piecesnot starters.

Great RB or not, injuries or not, you can't put an OL out there that was as poor as l
2022. Okst should have more talent than that. That ultimately lays at the feet of the leader of that OL room.

I HOPE DICKEY MAKES ME ALL THE CROW. Go POKES!

Pro Football Focus looks exclusively at tape, and they evaluate EVERY SINGLE SNAP - and they said Springfield was our best lineman. Professionals chose Springfield as honorable mention conference, not me. You are welcome to your opinion, but there are other available opinions too.

Athlon lists Springfield on their 4th team, out of 14 conf teams this year, same with Ollie Gordon)

Etienne is gone, got beat out, Miterko is not projected as a starter. Michaelson did pretty good in 2022 starting the last 4 games under center (considering he was forced into duty), especially in the ND bowl game.

This year's OLine looks like it could be pretty good and very experienced.

I respect PFF. They have some methodological issues with their OL grading. Especially in the weeds of the non NFL guys. I digress. It's clear you have your opinion of Dickey and I have mine.

Again, I hope you end up right. I loved the hire. But he's been underwhelming in recruiting and keeping the OL talent we have brought in. Injuries have contributed. So I'm good with rolling with him again.

I also think the offensive line could take a big step. Love Cole Brooks, and Wilson. However, I do not agree with rolling out Michalski over Kawecki at center. I think if the kid is close at all, roll with him so he can grow.

I'm hoping we see Birmingham and Cooper (god I hope Cooper works out) at tackles. Brooks and Wilson at the guards. And Kawecki at center.

by all accounts that I've seen, Wilson was a complete disaster at Center, but he was playing injured part of that time.

Maybe it makes sense to use somebody besides Michalski under center, but to begin the season he is experienced, and a RsSR, and has successfully started there. I'm glad we have competition. I'm thinking we'll see FR Sanders under center if we have injury, but I have no real basis for making that statement other than the scant reports we heard so far.

Thanks for the discussion, this is the one position group that I'm more interested in this season, and most excited for.

with so many changes on offense from OLine, RB, WR, QB and elimination of the CW, I don't really know what to expect.
