ARLINGTON, Texas - You’ve heard the old description, I always remember it from the movie, “The Blind Side” Tim McGraw playing Sean Tuohy describing his wife, Leigh Anne Tuohy to Michael Ohr as being “like an onion, you have to peel her back one layer at a time.” Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy is not like an onion, long term.

I just wish idiots would quit talking about a federal government solution. That is not the role of the federal government, there is no "right to a good team" in the constitution.

Why do the leagues leaders keep wasting our time and that of congress with petty issues like college sportsmanship?

I suspect that's why Gundy has talked about player's unions and player contracts with a particular school being perhaps a way to address some of this. Tough to pull off though when little Manning can go to Mississippi and get $250k a year under a 3 year binding contract or instead attend UT or A&M and get $500k with no contract. Some type of legal basis (union or legislation) will have to be present to make anything worthwhile and impactful.

I don't really agree with your conclusion.

Peyton didn't go to Ole Miss, why should this current Manning? If was money that brought Payton to Tenn, then things haven't really changed, have they?

Once you get into unions and contracts they I believe you actually become employees, and there are already employment laws. There are State laws about the portal too. The State are supposed to be sovereign, so the federal government doesn't really have standing do they, unless they somehow establish violations of anti-trust laws or restricting commerce between States.

IMO, the NCAA must establish rules and penalties for "meddling", or recruiting enticements, and stick to their "community work of players -- not pay for play", and let the rest fall where it may, just like it has always been.

Rodeo,

Some NCAA official came out several months ago to "reiterate" The NIL and meddling rules and said he expected compliance. Nick Saban was in the media shortly afterwards saying if those were the rules then Texas A&M and LSU should be in trouble. The NCAA did not even pretend to investigate. So Saban had let the cat out of the bag (which is what I think he intended to do), the NCAA had decided not to enforce the rules. That means we either live with unlimited money in pay-for-play and unlimited free agency or we create another model.

Going with a player's union, contracts, and salary caps is working in all the other professional sports and the laws are already vetted by the courts.

yes, I know, and the Aggies even flat out said, "we're going to follow State law" (in apparent defiance)

but the point that you made, and that I made, is that yes, the NCAA sent out a clarification letter, which is the first step. Now they need to take the next step and put teams on notice, but they must have the backing of the entire NCAA body of college Presidents. They have to be prepared to kick schools out of the Association, or impose a death penalty like they've done in the past for egregious cheaters.

We'll see if they get there or whether the whole Association simply collapses.
