Oklahoma State's Next Football Rival with Bedlam Closing? TBD

STILLWATER – This has become a hot topic I guess since the end of the 2023 Big 12 Football Media Days in Arlington last week and Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy being dragged, voluntarily, down the rabbit hole of a subject and a question, asked and answered multiple times over the past two years since Oklahoma announced their departure along with Texas to the SEC, which we now know will happen officially next July 1.

I'll go with the rivalry occurring naturally. I do think one of the ingredients in that will be who become our perennial opponents. As those 3 schools will be the ones we play in all sports every year and twice in basketball. So that means more chances to have that thing happen.

I'd also lean away from the other Big 8 schools as if it hasn't happened yet it's unlikely. It'll be a Texas school or new school most likely.

Our rival is going to be whomever is consistently playing against us for the conference championship.

like the old OU/NU days.

If we're not in those games, then frankly we don't deserve a "rival".

If we're just going to pick a random rival, then let's pick Central Florida..... heck why not. I like Orlando.

rivalry games are dead and over. Nobody really cares anymore. I could not tell you anything about the silly red river rivalry, or any of those other B12 rivalry games that nobody know about.

Rivalry games are invented by the media for media purposes, and that's it. It is only a "hot topic" amongst the goofy sports writers that don't have anything else to do and are too lazy to research an actual story.

I'd think Texas Tech and KSU both for OSU and I think teams are moving towards two "bigger rival games". Lots of recruiting run ins between OSU and Tech and it's a very even series. KSU's proximity to Stillwater and the relationships with ranching/farming are in place. And TCU and Baylor are naturals and already have it in for each other. Houston likely attaches some to UCF and Baylor, TCU and Tech already has heated up. KSU and KU are there as well. And proximity wise, KU and ISU are an easy travel game and ISU has Iowa already.

Essentially, every team in the new B12 either already has a rivalry, or will have a natural rivalry, except maybe BYU and UCF. And I don't see us being either of those teams #1 rivalry. Bottom line, we might eventually have a 2nd tier rivalry within the conference, but will never ever never have a national level tier 1 rivalry.

Rivalries are only for the fans. With the portal, players hop around so much there can't be any rivals.

I have spent years hearing that we were not OU's rival, that UT was. And it's probably true we were a secondary rival for OU. If the new Big 12 can stay together long enough, we could see a new rivalry devlop with any one of the conference teams.

One really good potential rival isn't a member - yet. Colorado.

That was always a lie. Watch who ou fans root for when we play Texas.

It isn't us.

and..... since we don't play every school (or play divisions), then there likely would be seasons where you don't even play your rival. If we get to pick a rival so that we play them every year, then KU is the obvious choice (grin)

It isn't so much of a rivalry as it's our annual root canal. Our futility in the Bedlam Series in football is the worst most lopsided in college football. To be a rivalry you have to win more than 15% of the time. It's an annual reminder of how far the two programs are apart in a variety of ways such as fan support, budget, roster depth, media coverage etc.

Our new rivals will likely be TCU, Tech, and Baylor. Who becomes the main one will be which one emerges as the most consistent. Our prayer is that we can continue our consistency and be more consistent too especially when Coach Gundy decides to hang it up.

our new rivalry will be whomever is 2nd in the conference and trying to knock us off...

anything else is just plain silly.

Hmmm.... I get your sarcasm. But most of my family and many of my friends are OU fans (none of them are alums). All of them root for OSU when we play Texas. That would indicate to me Texas is their big rival.

LOL! Sounds like my family have more honest relationships than yours.

Nah, lol! There's no reason to question the honesty of my family because there are no Zeros, they're not allowed. Further, I've never met a Zero that would rather lose to OSU than the Whorns thus your claim would seem a little blindly unrealistic.
