Shots Fired and a 16-Year Old is Killed at Choctaw During Game Against Del City

CHOCTAW, Okla. – It was an intense rivalry between two outstanding and respected programs in eastern Oklahoma County as Del City visited Choctaw in a week zero opener. Unlike some of the area high school football stadiums there are no metal detectors at Choctaw Stadium Bill Jensen Field. The game started late because of the heat. It was with close to four minutes left in the third quarter shots were fired and the players were the first to scatter and run off the playing surface and head for cover. Tragically, we found out later that a young person lost their life, a 16-year-old Midwest City High School student.  Pokes Report is an Oklahoma State and recruiting site, so we don’t typically get involved in this story, but we were there. Former Oklahoma State safety Deion Imade was calling the game on COX statewide and reported he was on the floor in the press box and things were very chaotic.

Rodney Fields had over 120-yards rushing, three touchdowns and another touchdown on a kickoff return.

These are neighboring communities and I can tell you from being there until halftime that emotions were high. Del City had taken control with a 27-11 halftime advantage. Oklahoma State commitment and standout Del City running back Rodney Fields had three first half touchdowns coming from 2, 63, and 16-yards. Fields then returned the opening kickoff of the second half 88-yards for his fourth touchdown of the night. Del City led 34-25 when the game was halted in the third quarter. 

At one a.m. Saturday morning, Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall told the media that there were four victims in the shooting and that one had been treated and released. The shooting took place on the east side of the stadium, which is the visitors side of the stadium at Choctaw. There was also a report of a woman being treated for a broken leg in the chaos of the evacuation of the stadium. The investigation is still being conducted. Chief Marshall said as of midnight there were no suspects in custody. Del City had officers there as security for their team and travel party. The Del City Police Chief said one of their officers discharged his weapon. 

Oklahoma City Police, Oklahoma County Sheriffs Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and Choctaw and Del City Police Departments all responded to the scene. 

Prior to being at Choctaw, Pokes Report was in Moore for the Edmond Memorial at Moore High School game.

Moore wide receiver C.J. Simon, who is an offer for Oklahoma State as a 2025 prospect had a quick start with a 34-yard gain on a jet sweep and then the first touchdown of the game on a touchdown pass shown on our video. 

Moore won the see saw affair with a late score giving the Lions the 31-28 first game win.

All of the accomplishments and games on Friday night in Oklahoma were overshadowed by the gun shots fired and the four fans injured in Choctaw.
