Hovland Runs Away with the FedEx Cup Capping Two Weeks of Extraordinary Golf
His name is finally on the trophy.
Viktor Hovland, a 25-year-old golf prodigy and Oklahoma State graduate, is the new owner of the FedEx Cup trophy and $18 million. He finished the FedEx Cup Championship with an amazing 27 under par to win by five shots over Xander Schauffele.
After shooting a seven under 63 on the day, the rest of the competition didn’t stand a chance at closing the gap Hovland made during the first three days of the Tour.
Coming into the Tour Championship fresh off a BMW Championship victory, Hovland set himself apart from the competition early. His performance throughout the first three rounds of play set him up for a 6-shot lead going into the championship round.
Heading into the final round of the tournament, Hovland expressed why winning the FedEx Cup would be important to him.
“The list of names that’s been on that trophy is pretty special,” Hovland said. “You know, it’s just a great list of names that have won the tournament and it would be awesome to have my name on there.”
Now, Hovland’s name is on the trophy, and his performance throughout the Tour Championship has secured his spot as one of the best young players the sport has seen in recent years.
