Gundy and Wozniak See Fields Help Del City Beat Washington 48-0
STILLWATER – The dead period is over that covers fall camps and the preparation for the start of the season. Coaches are making lots of phone calls as of today and they were able to hit the road for evaluations and seeing prospects play starting with the high school and junior college games as of Thursday night (Aug. 31). Oklahoma State has usually not used up any evaluation days in the fall this early, but they did on Thursday as head coach Mike Gundy and his wife, Kristen, and running backs coach John Wozniak were at Del City for the Eagles home opener with Tulsa Booker T. Washington. Security was heightened after the shooting incident that claimed the life of a 15-year-old Midwest City student at the Del City game at Choctaw. There were no incidents at Robert Kalsu Stadium, but Del City hammered the Washington Hornets 48-0.
Check out the video courtesy of KWTV/KOTV from Thursday night. Fields told me he scored two touchdowns and had another big night, but he wasn’t sure how many yards he had. I checked with Del City head coach Robert Jones and he knew. Fields had 18 carries for 166-yards and three receptions for 50-yards. 21 touches for 216-yards of total offense.
“We are off to a good season,” Fields told me by phone and he said he was happy that Coach Gundy and Coach Wozniak were there to see him play. “Everybody is balling, playing good. We have a lot of all-stars.”
A good example is quarterback River Warren, who was 18-of-21 on Thursday night for 216-yards and three touchdowns. He is another senior that deserves attention in recruiting, at least more than he is getting.
Fields told me he would be in Stillwater on Saturday to watch the Cowboys open the season against Central Arkansas. He asked me if I would be down on the field during warm-ups and I said I would. He said he was looking forward to that.
Of course, last week Fields opened the season with six carries for 142-yards with touchdown runs of 2, 63, and 16-yards and the 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half.
Del City is scheduled to host Midwest City next Friday night, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at Robert Kalsu Stadium.
