Just Like We Thought, Quarterback Competition Going to Round Two

STILLWATER – Just like we wrote on Sunday in the review the quarterback competition is not over and head coach Mike Gundy confirmed that in his weekly news conference. He acknowledged for the first time there is some built in difficulty to being not just the head coach, but also the father in this scenario as Gunnar Gundy, going third in the Saturday rotation came out as the most productive of the three.

“They played good.

Rangel likely would've had another TD if not for Birmingham's giant gaffes that ultimately caused the interception. Bowman's numbers would look a lot better and very possibly could've had a TD if not for the drops, specifically the one by Green that would've been at least a 25 yard completion.

This should be simple: give Rangel the majority of the snaps. Make him QB1 going into Tempe and let him have the benefit of the OL doing gap scheme blocking to open up more things for our running game. That's a benefit Gunnar got that Rangel didn't get vs. UCA. At that point, if Rangel isn't getting it done, THEN you rotate someone else.

Rangel started game 1.
Gundy or Bowman start game 2.
Whoever hasn't yet started, starts game 3.
Make a decision on QB1 before game 4.

Gunnar's running sure appears scariest for a defense. His passing seemed equal to the others and his strong point passing in the past is a great deep ball. I sure wouldn't mind him getting a chance to start and see if he has "it".

That Bowman is a freaking magician!!

according to the chart above, he threw 24 passes in only 18 plays! A-freaking-mazing

If it were me, and the competition is close between Rangel and Bowman, you make Rangel the starting QB and get him ready for the rest of his career.

I did think Bowman had better command of the offense and made quicker, better decisions with the ball…

I get that we need a figure it out, but UCA is much worse than ASU and SA so we can only be playing around so much before we need someone to lead. Hopefully ASU game decides something. Go Pokes

Apparently you can't read or comprehend, I said if it was even between Rangel or bowman, start Rangel. So they did agree with me… I never said anything about Gundy…did? I could have, but didn't think I did.

Your words - "If it were me, and the competition is close between Rangel and Bowman, you make Rangel the starting QB and get him ready for the rest of his career.

I did think Bowman had better command of the offense and made quicker, better decisions with the ball…"

You then said - "PFF agrees with me"

So, you think Bowman played better (though PFF shows otherwise), but you'd start Rangel even though Gundy outplayed both of them.

That's some crazy stuff right there.

Again reading comprehension escapes you. I didn't say he played better, I said he had better command of the offense and made quicker decisions. He should, he has so much kid experience.

If Mike really thinks it's an even race, then you should give the node to the younger guys and let them grow and mature in the games and either flourish this year or gore this. Year and next year you have a really decent QB with a lot of experience coming in 2024.

I'm confused. On one hand you say "PFF agrees with you" [Bowman had better command and made better decisions than Rangel], and on the other hand you say "i did not say Bowman played better than Rangel". And on yet the third hand you never mentioned the play of Gundy which graded out the highest.

I think I'll stick with my first substantive comment to your declaration - I think you have some preconceived opinions that affect your personal evaluation of the UCA game (such that you completely ignore Gundy's performance). JMO

That grade for Gundy is not surprising, he really seemed to have the most control of the game, and to do the most to get the troops motivated. There was an attitude shift when he came in.

I agree its really too close to call, but those wanting to just discount Gundy are not being honest. He's in the mix, and could very well be the best option. Never count out motivation, a QB that has it makes a huge difference.

I did thing Rangel looked good, and was disappointed in Bowman. I'd guess we'll see all three in equal amounts unless events move in to give one of them the bulk of time this Saturday. Honestly this game may not be as tough as UCA was. This team is playing under a new coach and had the rug of post season play pulled out from under them. They actually did play poorly having to come from behind to beat Southern Utah last week. They could be in the process of total collapse or could get tough and rebound.

I agree with this because the younger guys have more upside potential, and they are the future. If it's that close, you go with the younger guy. Bowman was hurt by some key WR drops, so have to take that into account. But even then they played fairly evenly.

Kind of interesting side data:
We ran 8 legitimate run plays (excluding scrambles) with Rangel at QB for 33 yards and about 4.5 yards per carry.
We ran only 2 run plays with Bowman at QB for 10 yards and 5 yards/carry (there's one team rush for 1 yard in the play by play that I don't know about)
We ran 11 run plays with Gundy for 83 yards and about a 7.5 yards/carry, and that's with a 43 yard run by Ollie called back for holding that I couldn't see. This was in full blown gap blocking mode, and it looked impressive.

So basically 10 legitimate running plays through 3 quarters. It wasn't that we were not successful running early, it's that we just weren't running the ball early. It reminded me of our past offense; a couple of runs for little or no gain and then a pop for good yards. That makes sense because we were running our old offense. But I get it, you evaluate QB's by watching them progress through reads and make their throws, which lends itself to our old pass first offense. Had we gone from the start just wanting to just win this game by pounding the ball, I think we could have dominated them.

It is actually REALLY SIMPLE, Gundy and Rangel force a change in the defensive tactics because both can hurt you with their feet thus you don't see the blitzes and other pressure packages you see used against Bowman!!! Also, the two defensive ends for UCA were LEGITIMATELY GOOD, ESPECIALLY NUMBER EIGHT WHO,PEOPLE ARE SAYING COULD PLAY AT THE NEXT LEVEL!!! Sometimes, and I am guilty of this as well, you have to give the opponents coaching staff and players credit! I agree that they outcoached Mike and the OSU staff!!!
