Cowboys Recruiting Analysis: Five-Stars, OSU Offered Them, Has a Chance at Kobe Black

STILLWATER – If I had a dime for everytime I heard an “Oklahoma State fan” say that the reason Oklahoma State can’t win more conference championships or move the program up is the head coach Mike Gundy and his staff don’t try to recruit the best players the five-stars. Oklahoma State has had a handful of five-star players. They have had more four-star players and more of them have panned out in production.

Just stop with the "truth is Oklahoma State does offer almost every 5 star recruit in their recruiting footprint" stuff. I don't expect the Pokes to secure 5 star prospects. I do understand what the other schools are offering. I am disappointed the Pokes do not secure more 4 star recruits. The OSU coaches and staff do a very good job developing players. Just look at the results! The fact is they overachieve with the talent level they recruit. Given their success on the field I would think the Pokes could recruit better. Is it out of line to suggest their recruiting classes should be ranked in the 20's occasionally and consistently in the 30's? If the Pokes could do that I believe they could achieve more.

I completely agree. The problem with coaching guys up is depth. If you have guys that are closer to ready like a solid 4 star instead of underweight small 3 star then the drop off in production won't be as drastic.

You have an opportunity to pick up these four znd five stars twice, as high school recruits or thru the portal! The problem is that you are not going to take a portal guy who is a former 4 or 5 star that has flamed out his first two or three years of college and never should have received that rating IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

What about Okoye I believe I read he's a life long Okst fan, Mom went to Osu. From what I read we talked to him once and basically ignored him. He wanted to go somewhere he felt he was wanted. Number 1 player in Oklahoma. Seemed like an easy get.

apparently, according to the facts, OSU DOES offer almost every 5-star recruit in their recruiting footprint stuff. You offered nothing to the contrary except disbelief... not facts.

"recruiting better" is almost always a matter of opinion.

class recruiting rankings are all BOGUS...

tell my why the two major recruiting sites, in addition to simply making up the player rankings from thin air, also "adjust" the CLASS rankings according to whim?

You are familiar with how the services manipulate the class rankings to favor their favorite schools, right? You can point those nuances out to us, right?

one site uses "bonus points', and the other major site uses a "bell curve" to average out rankings supposedly to account for differences in "class size", wink, wink.

Robert had a whole story about this a couple of weeks ago before we played K State, just look in the archived stories and you will probably find it!

Reread my post. I am not offering disbelief I am offering irrelevance! My point is that it's not about securing more 5-star recruits.

"Class recruiting rankings are all BOGUS." "Recruiting sites make up their player ratings from thin air." Are you joking? So what programs are consistently at the top of the recruiting rankings? Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, OU, Michigan, etc. Of course it is an inexact science and coaching matters. Just look at Texas A&M and Florida who consistently recruit well but have not performed as well on the field. The fact is that the best teams in the country are mostly the top teams in the recruiting rankings. Therefore, maybe the recruiting services know something about evaluating players.

Also, as an FYI, the major services actually employ former coaches/analysts and players and have become more accurate over the past years in their evaluations. And, the "adjusting on a whim" just may be because players actually improve (or not) as they become older and develop (or not).

I'll stick with my post. The OSU coaches and staff do a great job developing players but the Pokes would be even better if they recruited a little better.

not to bust your bubble.... but POP!

The top 5-6 teams are going to be there REGARDLESS of whether the services rate their players or not.

Mostly the services adjust their ratings based on who recruits the players, or to whom the players commit...not the way that you're suggesting (that those teams are good because the services rated their players high)

How about those recruiting ranking stalwarts #7, #10, #13, #14, #15 .... SMH

I just don't know why some folks insist on buying into that bunk with the preponderance of contradictory evidence.

You're welcome to your opinion, it's just not a very good one. (POP QUIZ: What came first the good player, the recruiting team or the rating service?)

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for proving my point!

The winningest programs of the last 10 years is PERFECT! Look at all those elite recruiting teams at the top of it! Bama, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia.... It's just a coincidence that they recruit at an elite level AND play at an elite level. Recruiting rankings are all fake news right?

How about those recruiting ranking stalwarts #7, #10, #13, #14, #15 .... SMH

You're using Boise St, SDST, UCF and Cincy...group of 5 schools...to prove your point? Thanks again for proving mine. I'll stick with #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6.

My original point was that Coach Gundy and his staff do a great job in developing players but I feel could achieve more if they recruited a little better. Congrats to OSU and Wisconsin for overachieving based on their talent. You simply refuse to believe the recruiting services have any value in their player ratings. Kind of hard to take that position considering the best teams of the past 10 years seem to have the most highly rated players by the services. Once again, maybe it's just a coincidence.

Look, I'm sorry you find the recruiting services worthless. Recruiting is definitely an inexact science. I'm actually a huge Coach Gundy fan. I just wonder sometimes how good the Pokes might be with just a little more talent.

yeah, I get it, I just do not agree with how you define talent.

The players were great and are great before the stars were assigned, they miss sooo badly on sooo many players that the rating are essentially a ghoulish joke.

We had "talent" just last year that went an played for many P5 teams...

I was actually using OSU to prove the point, but also listed the other exceptions. Your ranking are clearly far from fool proof... very far.

Those very teams that you noted in 1-6 were also there BEFORE RANKINGS EXISTED.... go figure.
