Pokes Recruiting: Maealiuaki Smith and Serra Stay Unbeaten and No. 1 in Bay Area

STILLWATER – Back from the Cowboys 48-34 win in Morgantown, W.V. and catching up on the recruiting news for Oklahoma State. I can’t say that I was surprised on the news that Tulsa Union cornerback Devon Jordan made a commitment to Oklahoma. I never felt Jordan was going to end up a Cowboy as he kept saying Oklahoma State was in there.

Robert Allen - Pokes Report
Black at the Oklahoma State win over KU.

Now, Oklahoma State focuses on the guy I think they can get and that is Kobe Black, the five-star standout from Waco Connally. There are a number of recruiting gurus doubting that, but I know Oklahoma State coaches were on the phone with Black right after his older brother Korie and the Cowboys downed West Virginia. The lure is playing with his brother and playing for a coach he knows will in Tim Duffie and a coach he is getting to know in OSU defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo.

Black helped Connally go to 5-3/2-0 with a 39-21 win over Salado. Black caught one pass for 31-yards, had four tackles in the game, and also picked off a pass. He is up to three interceptions on the season now.

Smith can really spin it and it looks like he favors Oklahoma State.

Out West, Oklahoma State quarterback target Maealiuaki Smith kept Junipero Serra unbeaten at 8-0/4-0 with a 53-7 win over Archbishop Riordan. Smith threw what the San Jose Mercury called a 20-yard dart for an early touchdown to Cole Harrison and the 6-4, 200-pound Smith continues to have the Padres on top and ranked No. 1 in the Bay Area and in the WCAL.

This coming Friday, the Cowboys two most recent commitments in offensive linemen Semisi Tonga (6-4, 320) and Nuku Mafi (6-5, 295) will open their playoff run with Salt Lake City West High School against Alta.

Other schools are working toward the playoffs with offensive tackle Caleb Hackleman and Pleasant Grove in Texarkana staying unbeaten at 8=0/3-0 with a win over Liberty-Eylau 42-27.

Linebacker Gunnar Wilson and Melissa are also 8-0 and the Cardinals are 5-0 in district after destroying Greenville 55-14. Wlson and that Melissa defense held Greenville to 226-yards of total offense.

Temerrick Johnson, another very talented linebacker at Midlothian Heritage is tearing it up and Heritage is 8-0/5-0 after beating Corsicana 56-13 and holding the home team to 136-yards of offense.

Luke Webb (left)

Defensive end Luke Webb is racking up big sack numbers and tackles-for-loss as Deer Park is 7-1/3-1 and handled Channelview 56-39.

Cornerback Willie Nelson and Longview are 7-1/5-0 after the Lobos beat McKinney North 36-13.

Back in Oklahoma, no telling what the numbers were on Rodney Fields, the Del City running back is over 1,000-yards now with a couple of regular season games left. Fields had 150-yards on only four carries and scored a touchdown. Del City is 8-0/5-0 after beating Glenpool 67-0 on Thursday night last week.  This Friday they have a big game with Coweta.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not even a chance for Kobe Black. OSU wasn't in the final 5. Did he come to the blackout game? Sure, his brother was playing, and it was an off week for him. Come on, we know how this goes.

Does anyone know when Maealiuaki will make a decision?

Supposedly he's a "silent commitment" but just hasn't gone public yet. No clue as to why. You'd think the two recent OL commitments would help.

There's definitely a chance for him. Don't be silly.

I've watched some of his HUDL clips. I did not see any where he ran with the ball. That does not necessarily mean he is a poor runner but I was wondering if he was any kind of a dual threat...also does anyone know how he compares talent wise with Flores?

I think he is more of a Rudolph & Bowman type pro style passer with a pretty strong arm! But it seems like all of these Poly kids are really good overall athletes!!!

Kobe Black could be waiting to see if Korie declares for the draft. I know NFL scouts are very interested in him.

naw.... it's his brother, he could just ask him.

He hasn't got a draft grade from the NFL yet this year. If he's undecided at this point I expect younger brother knows that. I would guess he won't make that decision until he gets that information. OSU and Coach Duffie pupils have had good success in the league.

or..... the unspeakable... portal.

we lost most of our good defensive starters to blue blood programs last year (ND, UCS, Washington, etc.)

The longer it takes for his brother to commit, the less likely it seems that Korie will be a Cowboy next year - IMHO.

I don't believe the portal will be as much of an issue as it was last year. The locker room chemistry and attitudes are 1000 times better this year. OSU is in a better position now with NIL then last year too.

Most of the dirty water as far as chemistry issues are concerned left in the portal last December (2022). The one thing you always fear is a situation like Jarrick Bernard-Converse in 2021 or Jabbar Muhammad and Mason Cobb in 2022 where BIG $$$$$ in NIL hurt us!!!
