Johnson Stays Home and Celebrates with a Big Win and Dallas Morning News Honor
STILLWATER – Midlothian Heritage (Texas) linebacker Temerrick Johnson, also a very talented edge rusher helped his team on Friday to a 21-14 win over Arlington Seguin and clinch the District 5-5A-II championship and a top seed in the playoffs out of the district. He didn’t make it to Stillwater on Saturday with some of the other Cowboys commitments to see Oklahoma State beat Cincinnati. That’s okay. He truly honed his game on Friday night. The 6-3, 210-pound speedy Johnson had five tackles-for-loss, three sacks, and keyed a defensive effort that allowed just seven points and 49-yards rushing on 30 attempts to Seguin. Heritage also forced three turnovers inclduing two picks.
“I feel like they didn’t really prepare for me as much as other teams,” Johnson told the Dallas Morning News as they made him the DFW-Area Defensive Player of the Week. “Whenever a team does that, I want to take full advantage of it, and I felt like I did that night against Seguin. When they only put a tackle and a running back on me, I feel like I should dominate.”
Johnson first started at Heritage as a sophomore and he played corner, but after a few blitzes that added up to 45 tackles, 6 tackles-for-loss, and 2.5 sacks. The staff made some moves.
“We moved him closer to the ball pretty fast,” Midlothian Heritage head coach Eric Edwards said. “Lot of potential, which I think was one of the biggest things [for] all those colleges that recruited him. He has developed his game — his physicality, his motor and [he has] more than just one pass rush. He’s come a long way.”
Committed to Oklahoma State in the summer, Johnson was voted a captain by his teammates. The No. 61 overall player and 11th-ranked defensive lineman in SportsDay’s top 100 Dallas-area recruits in the Class of 2024.
