Everything Goes Wrong for No. 15 Oklahoma State in 45-3 Loss to UCF

Just about everything went wrong for No. 15 Oklahoma State as they lost to UCF on the road in Orlando, 45-3.

With the loss, the Cowboys moved to 7-3 on the season and 5-2 in Big 12 play. The Cowboys are now 0-27 in games when trailing by 24 points under Mike Gundy. It also marked just the second game in the AP Poll history, 1936, a team under .500 on the season beat an AP Top-15 team by more than 40 points. UCLA beat then No. 11 Texas 66-3 in 1997.

“I thought [UCF’s] coaches did a good job,” head coach Mike Gundy told the Cowboy Radio Network. “I thought they had good schemes on both sides of the ball. My job as a head coach is to evaluate everything going on and they did a good job of coaching. Then the perfect storm started; they hit us [big] a couple of times and then they got some 50/50 balls on us where we weren’t that far off in coverage, they made plays. Then we drive down the field, we’re moving just fine, and then we fumble. Then they hit us and score, they convert a couple of third and longs and score. Then we’re driving back down, in great shape, then we get a penalty and we still hit an in-route to Leon [Johnson III], [the ball] bounces off his helmet on the 12-yard line and they catch it. That perfect storm part, it happened to us, that’s just the way it is.”

The Cowboys couldn’t get anything going on the offensive side of the ball in the first half as quarterback Alan Bowman, while he completed 11 of 15 passes for 134 yards in the pouring rain, he also threw two interceptions. The Cowboys had one of the worst rushing performances we’ve seen in quite some time as they combined for just nine carries for -6 yards. Ollie Gordon II, who entered this game with 1,225 yards and 12 touchdowns, finished the first half with just seven carries for 10 yards and a lost fumble.

On the game, Bowman finished going 19-of-36 for 225 yards and three interceptions.

“I just think it was a lot of unfortunate events,” Oklahoma State quarterback Alan Bowman said after the game on the Cowboy Radio Network. “There’s a huge advantage of when you get the ball first, going down and scoring first because you put pressure immediately on the other team. That’s what we’ve been doing the past six weeks: if we get the ball first, we go down and score. We felt like they were in the driver’s seat and we were playing catch up Obviously, some unfortunate turnovers in the rain. It’s one of those games where kind of everything went wrong [for us] and everything went right for them.”

As for the run game, the Cowboys combined for just 52 yards and one fumble on 25 carries. Gordon II finished the game with 12 carries for 25 yards.

The defensive side wasn’t much better as they allowed the most first quarter points for the team this season, 14, and then 10 in the second quarter. By the break, the Knights had 320 yards of total offense, 207 yards through the air and 113 on the ground.

For the game, the Pokes gave up 592 yards, 299 through the air and 293 on the ground. The Knights averaged 24.9 yards per completion and 5.7 yards per carry.

The second half wasn’t much better. Despite Alex Hale making a field goal on the opening drive of the half for the Pokes, which was followed by a strip sack by Collin Oliver, recovered by Xavier Benson, Bowman threw his third interception of the day on the ensuing drive. With the drive starting on the UCF eight-yard line, RJ Harvey took it 92 yards for a touchdown, the second longest rush in the FBS this season and the longest run ever allowed by an OSU defense.

The Cowboys are back out on the road next week as they’ll head down to Houston to face to Cougars.

I have been traveling most of the afternoon to attend a funeral on Monday and listened to most of the game on the Serrius/XM app but I have to ask was this one worse than South Alabama in September or the 48 - 0 butt kicking last year at Kansas State??? That was awful to listen to, I can just imagine what it was like watching it on TV!!!

Reminded me of the futility of last year's KSU game. Terrible. Azz kicking. Safe travels and sorry for your loss.

It was pretty rough in person. The fans we sat with were nice, that's about the only positive thing that comes to mind. Glad we took our rain gear.

First, allow me to say sorry for your loss.
I would say that the blowout to South Alabama was worse because that was a home game against a team we should beat. There was a reason OSU was only a slight favorite. Coming off a huge Bedlam win, long road trip to Orlando, and UCF is not as bad as their record would indicate. I'm not surprised we lost though the margin was a bit of a shock. As for last year's K-State game, that team was beat all to hell.

This loss reminded of the big loss after last year's UT win. But, I think this will cause us to rally Wth a big response. I expect us to soundly beat the cougars. But, it was horrible, disheartening. I keep reminding myself that in September I figured we would never get to 6 wins. So, there is that.

It was honestly a waste of a broadcast. They looked pathetic from the jump in all phases.

I think the loss had many factors & dimensions. Things that stuck out to me - team maturity (at least the public display of immaturity on the part of Gordon, early lack of intensity then yakking back at people in the stands), drastic performance letdown by the O-line from the previous weeks, chunk play D was a total fail (which was always a recognized weakness), and the further we got behind the more our O pressed which created bad mistakes. There were also contributing factors that had a lot of impact - weather and support team lack of planning to be prepared for the weather (c'mon...who doesn't prepare for rain in Florida? Yet we were totally unprepared with no rain shelters on the sidelines and reported lack of dry towels & ability to get balls dry). On the positive, I was impressed with the field conditions after it got wet. I don't remember seeing a single slip & fall on routes or assignments like we did in an earlier game (Iowa State...?).

Side note....I think we may have found a replacement ******* fanbase for the sewerners and whorns. It was obvious that we didn't deserve as high a CFP ranking as we had (and I think most of us had suspicions about the ranking) but a school with a single previous conference win chanting "Overrated" almost the whole 2nd half.... I have a school to replace utn & texass that I hope loses every game they play.

Gundy-"We Got Out Coached"-This seems to be Gundy's Go Too Excuse. That folks is what $7.625M gets us fans. If I would have personally used that excuse in my job, they would have told me to don't let the door hit you in the ass. That excuse is inexcusable. Gundy is not dealing in reality.

Our DC and our OC are an embarrassment. They both should have followed Spencer Sanders straight out of Stillwater. Our DC is a Div II guy!

And,
These players are not kids.
Most of the players aren't students.
These players decided to play minor league football at OSU and let the schools and supporters pay them to do it. No money from the NFL!
And they can't get motivated to finish the season and play in the Big 12 Championship? Yes we need to clean house of coaches.

Folks, OSU scored 3 F-ing Points!

Whatever you say, doc. Apparently we're back to "can Gundy and all the coaches and all the players. Burn it all down and start over". What a great idea. Not.

Here we go again. Why don't you follow Sanders? Every loss is back to this old worn out crap. We have great players and coaches. Sorry, but I felt the need to defend my team that I invest in emotionally and financially. There are always going to be bad days. Pick up the mess and make it right. Go Pokes!

I don't understand why coaches always think they have to do the same practices days each week. The team was clearly burnt out after a big Bedlam win. I would have given the team off Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Great CEO's know when to give employees a break. Rarely happens in coaching though!

We aren't Ou fans guys. We can't burn it down every time we lose. Yes it was ugly, but every time we got anything going there's a tipped pass int then fumble etc etc. Defense couldn't have stopped Carl Albert high school yesterday. Crap happens, we already had two losses probably weren't going to the playoff anyway. We still control everything to the Big 12 championship. Just gotta win two. Growing pains will happen with multiple true freshman playing on defense.

How does this play out if ISU beats Texas and then Tex, ISU and OSU win their remaining?
CProc7

They would go over us because they beat us. I highly doubt they beat Texas or Ksu much less both of them. If we show like we did this week we can lose to Houston also.

I was referring more to us and Texas. We didn't play Texas, so who goes?

Momentum is real... we never could get it in our favor... Zachary's opening statement said it all, "Just about everything went wrong". New week though, keep pushing! Go Pokes!!

It would go to some tie breaker like common opponent or points forced or something I assume, but Texas plays Isu and Tech and they'll have to lose both before those questions come up.

I'm definitely not a burn-it-all-down guy, but I do want to see coaching changes.

We knew going into the season that with our many Fresh/Soph players, the new 3-3-5 system and new DC that there would be mistakes and breakdowns.

What no one planned for are the Offensive meltdowns. The offensive coaching staff has no excuse for this performance, nor the performances against USA and KState '22. They have enough team talent to work with to at least be competitive against B12 and G5 teams. Dunn has successfully locked up the top 3 losses in program history. Dunn simply cannot respond, nor gut out a W if his fragile game plan gets poked or prodded.

The worst part about this loss is how bad the defense we played has been all season. We have a new scheme on defense and true freshman are playing a ton so they get a pass. The offense needs answers when things aren't going right.
