STILLWATER – We met Jacobi Oliphant back on Oct. 28 in the reception room of the West End Zone as I was arriving at Boone Pickens Stadium for the game with Cincinnati. Oliphant and his family were there waiting to be taken on a tour of the stadium and football facilities on the field level and coaches level. The 6-4, 185-pound Oliphant was striking and after being introduced (out of natural consideration) I walked away thinking that Oklahoma State had another really good looking cornerback or safety prospect out of St. Louis. I also remember thinking how Oliphant and his parents looked so happy.  Now, we all know why.

“I really loved it here from the moment we got there,” Oliphant told me inside the Sherman Smith Training Center on Friday when I said hello again. “This place is great and I knew that back on that day.”

Now, he has made it official and Oliphant has committed after his official visit over the weekend. His offer list grew after the Cowboys offered him, but he and his parents were stuck on Oklahoma State.

I remember that next day after that bump into each other meeting in the reception area, I went in and studied some tape and speed and explosion Oliphant had on that 98-yard kickoff return for th St. Louis University High School got my attention, but so did all of his play. He is a very long and rangy athlete that has strong fundamental skills and talents in covering and making tackles. He is not just a good athlete but show signs of being smart on the field and fundamentally sound.

This past season he had 86 tackles, 66 unassisted tackles, 2.0 tackles-for-loss, 3.0 sacks, a pair of interceptions (one returned 40-yards for a touchdown), four fumbles recovered, and the 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

His career tackles show a tackling machine with 311 tackles, 146 unassisted tackles, 5.0 tackles-for-loss, 4.0 sacks, five interceptions, five fumbles recovered, and the two touchdowns, one on an interception and the other the kickoff return.

Here is a very smart student and football player that should develop rapidly and is going to be fun to watch.
