STILLWATER – D.J. McKinney had shown a lot of promise and late in the season he was playing more and more football this season at Oklahoma State. He would have come back and been a primary figure at the cornerback position. Instead, he chose to go in the transfer portal. The talk was his family was shopping him from an NIL standpoint. It would appear that Colorado and second-year head coach and College and Pro Football Hall-of-Famer cornerback Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes and their collective were the winner.

McKinney announced on Sunday evening (Jan. 7) that he is heading to Boulder to be with Colorado. That means he will play against Oklahoma State next season when the Cowboys visit Folsom Field for the first time since Colorado left the Big 12.

The date for that game has not been set, but it is one of the Cowboys road games next season in Big 12 Conference play.

McKinney in his two seasons at Oklahoma State had 39 tackles, 25 unassisted. All of those except one unassisted tackle came this past season as he played in all 14 of the Cowboys games. He also defended five passes all this season.

McKinney came to the Cowboys out of Colleyville Heritage High School in the DFW region. Sanders and his staff at then Jackson State University had show interest and recruited McKinney.
