STILLWATER – The Cowboys coming off a nice win on Friday over No. 22 Northern Iowa were in it much thicker on Saturday night as the No.5 Cowboys were hosting No. 4 Iowa State and a host of top Cyclone wrestlers. Five Cowboys were favored in the dual and five Cyclones looked to have the upper hand, but when it was all said and done Oklahoma State knocked off the team ranked just ahead of them 21-to-12 and in doing so claimed six of the matches.
“Good weekend,” head coach John Smith said. “It was a competitive dual and came down to whow as going to get the take down and who was going to score in the third (or sudden victory). I thought we did a nice job of picking up bonus early and Jamison coming back and picking up the take down. He had really struggled trying to get to a leg.”
The key matches to victory were at 141-pounds where an admittedly slumping No. 9 Tagen Jamison gathered himself for a push in sudden victory and got the take down to upset No. 8 Anthony Echemednia 4-1. It was the first match that brought the Gallagher-Iba house down for the first time.
“The last three matches I’ve wrestled including this one I’ve struggled with finding my offense,” Jamison said afterwards. “It is really a mental block for me. Today pulling off this win was pretty important for me. I made the decision in sudden victory I was going to sprint at him. I was going to get that takedown.”
Oklahoma State won at 125-pounds with No. 20 Troy Spratley holding on to a 4-2 decision over No. 25 Kysen Terukina. It was a tough match that Spratley aggressively got the first take down to key the win.
No. 3 Daton Fix stayed unbeaten at 7-0 with a major decision over No. 7 Evan Frost 11-3. Frost was cautioned but never called for stalling as he basically just tried to avoid getting beat by tech fall. He backed up most of the match.
After Jamison gained his exciting sudden victory, No. 10 Casey Swiderski of Iowa State won a competitive 8-2 decision over No. 17 Sammy Alvarez at 149. The Cowboys No. 18 Teague Travis scored a relatively uneventful 8-3 decision over Iowa State’s unranked Jason Kraisser at 157 pounds.
Iowa State standout and NCAA Champion at 157 pounds David Carr has moved up, but the No. 3 Carr scored an 8-1 decision over the Cowboys No. 4 Izzak Olejnik. In a tossup match at 174 pounds No 23 M.J. Gaitan of Iowa State scored a takedown in sudden victory and a 6-3 decision over No. 25 Brayden Thompson of the Cowboys.
On to the next heart stopper and it was that way only because Oklahoma State fans love to see their wrestlers pile the points on and No. 2 Dustin Plott coming off a loss to No. 1 Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa last night came back with a determined vengence and hammered No, 10 Will Fieldkamp of the Cyclones. Plott scored the major and almost a tech fall with a 17-3 win that featured over two minutes of riding time.
“That was huge for him to come back from getting beat by a good wrestler and he comes back and does that,” Smith said of Plott. “I was proud of the way he came back one night after getting beat. He was aggressive.”
You think the crowd was wild there, Jersey Robb has been thrown into tough spots as he’s moved up to 197 pounds from 184. The freshman that was a football and wrestling star for Bixby didn’t just fill in tonight. He romped coming out and taking command from the start and throwing No. 30 Julien Broderson all over the mat. Robb won a major decision 15-6 and the crowd and Robb were sharing a wild enthusiasm throughout the match.
“I love Gallagher and that was a pretty good rush at the end hearing everybody yell,” Robb said.
Asked if it was the most fun that he’s had on the wrestling mat?
“I think so, I think that’s up there,” Robb answered. “I’ve been coming to these duals since I was a little kid and to be able to go out there and do this for my team that was awesome, man.”
It ended with the loss at heavyweight as Iowa State’s No. 3 Yonger Bastida decisioned No. 9 Konner Doucet 7-2.
Oklahoma State stays unbeaten at 10-0 and 5-0 in the Big 12. Iowa State falls to 9-2 and loses for the first time in Big 12 action and goes to 2-1.
Oklahoma State wrestles Arizona State next Friday at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
