Oklahoma State Sends Seven to Semifinals Following First Session of Big 12 Wrestling

It was a successful first session at the Big 12 Wrestling Championships in Tulsa for Oklahoma State as the Pokes are sending seven wrestlers to the semifinals and are just three and a half points behind Iowa State in second place.

The Cowboys finished the first session with a 12-3 overall record, with three wrestlers headed to Saturday night’s consolation matches.

All 10 Cowboy wrestlers compete in the second session on Saturday evening, which kicks off at 5 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.

The trio of Daton Fix, Dustin Plott and Tagen Jamison all recorded two bonus point wins in their matches Saturday morning, with the No. 1 seed Fix recording an 18-3 tech fall over North Dakota State’s Fernando Barreto and pinning Wyoming’s Garrett Ricks in the first period of the quarterfinals.

The No. 2 seed Plott was equally as dominant at 184 pounds as he recorded a first-period fall over OU’s Giuseppe Hoose and turned around and beat No. 7 Dennis Robin from West Virginia with an 18-3 tech fall in the quarters.

Jamison matched both Fix and Plott’s 18-3 tech falls as he beat OU’s Kaden Smith in the opening round and then beat No. 7 seed Haiden Drury from Utah Valley with a 10-0 major in the 141 quarterfinals.

There were four Cowboy wrestlers who received byes in the prelim matches. Those four Cowboys all advanced to the semifinals with wins over ranked opponents, starting with No. 2 Troy Spratley at 125 pounds. He beat West Virginia’s No. 7 seed Jett Strickenberger, while No. 4 Jordan Williams beat No. 5 Alek Martin from South Dakota State at 149 pounds, No. 4 Izzak Olejnik beat No. 5 Giano Petrucelli from Air Force at 165 pounds and No. 3 Brayden Thompson beat OU’s Tate Picklo, the No. 6 seed, at 174 pounds.

The three Cowboys who will be wrestling in the consolation matches Saturday evening are No. 3 Teague Travis, No. 5 Konner Doucet and No. 7 Luke Surber. Both Travis and Doucet won their first matches to advance to the quarterfinals, but both loss those matches, while Surber lost in his prelim match.
