Oklahoma State Wraps Up Day One of Big 12 Championships in Second Place
TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team finished the first day of the 2024 Big 12 Wrestling Championships in second place Saturday, advancing four wrestlers to Sunday night's finals and six more to Sunday morning’s consolation semifinals.
OSU’s 119.5 team points are just 10 points behind first place Iowa State. The Cowboys are the only team with all 10 wrestlers remaining in the tournament and they can all finish in at least third place.
The Cowboy finalists include Troy Spratley at 125 pounds, Daton Fix at 133 pounds, Jordan Williams at 149 pounds and Dustin Plott at 184 pounds. It marks the fifth Big 12 finals appearance for Fix, the third for Plott and the first for both Spratley and Williams.
Plott’s win over No. 6 seed Sam Wolf of Air Force looked much like his two wins earlier in the day as his 21-4 technical fall marked his third bonus-point win of the tournament. His 20.0 tournament team points total leads the team and is the second-most of any wrestler at the event.
Not far behind that, Fix finished the day with 18.5 team points as his comfortable 4-0 decision over fourth-seeded Derrick Cardinal of South Dakota State followed a pin and technical fall Saturday morning.
Williams provided one of the highlights of the tournament and his young career when he knocked off top-seeded and sixth-ranked Casey Swiderski of Iowa State by building a lead and holding off a series of late shots to preserve the 8-7 victory. The win was just the third loss this season for Swiderski and marked the highest-ranked opponent Williams has beaten in his career thus far.
Also advancing in dramatic style, Spratley gained a stalling point with 22 seconds remaining in sudden victory to defeat Iowa State’s Kysen Terukina, 2-1, and move on to the finals.
OSU’s Tagen Jamison (141 pounds), Izzak Olejnik (165 pounds) and Brayden Thompson (174 pounds) also wrestled in the championship semifinals, but lost decisions to move into the consolation semifinals.
Cowboys Teague Travis (157 pounds) Luke Surber (197 pounds) and Konner Doucet (HWT) joined the trio in the consolation semifinals after each going 2-0 in the consolation rounds Saturday night.
“Nice to win six straight consolation matches,” coach John Smith said. “That was good. I thought we wrestled pretty good. I didn’t think some of us would be in such tough matches, but we’ve been in some tough matches (throughout the year). Some of the guys that were a little slow in the second semester with injuries, it showed a little bit today, but they found a way to get their hand raised. At this point, that’s good.”
Those six can each finish as high as third place in their bracket. All 10 Cowboys compete Sunday, with the six in the placement matches wrestling in the early session and the four in the finals wrestling later that night.
Session III of the 2024 Big 12 Wrestling Championships begins at 12 p.m. CT. Fans can watch the action live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, see live results on TrackWrestling.com and follow updates via @CowboyWrestling on X.
