OSU Transfer Portal Update: Justin McBride Enters the Portal

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State freshman forward Justin McBride entered the transfer portal on Monday. He became the fifth player to enter the portal, joining fellow freshmen Brandon Garrison and Eric Dailey, as well as Quion Williams and Javon Small.

Jamyron Keller, Bryce Thompson and Connor Dow are the three players left on the roster who still have eligibility and haven’t entered the portal. With that, new head coach Steve Lutz has nine roster spots to fill.

This past season, McBride played in 24 of the Cowboys’ 32 games, averaging just 6.4 minutes per game. He averaged 2.5 points on 52% shooting from the field and brought down 1.5 rebounds.

Robert Allen - Pokes Report

I’m not too surprised McBride entered the portal simply based on the quote Lutz gave during his introductory press conference. When asked by former guard John-Michael Wright if he was going to tell players if they fit into the system, or just let them sit on the end of the bench without playing, Lutz had this to say.

“Justin [McBride] and I actually talked this morning. Am I honest? Yeah, I’m almost honest to a fault guys. If there is ever a fault for being too honest. I’m not knocking on Justin because I love him, he’s asking good questions. To answer your question, yes. As I said a minute ago, this is not always a fit for everybody.”

Now, keeping with the transfer portal and switching over to football, the football transfer portal opens today, April 16. As of this date, there doesn’t appear to be any players who are going through spring football right now that want to enter the portal. It’s always possible you could see players deep down the depth chart and/or walk-ons who want to play who enter.

However, something to make note of, the portal closes on April 30 and the Cowboys wrap spring football on the 27th. You can always enter the portal during the open period and come out whenever, you just can’t enter the portal after the 30th.

Robert and I will be keeping an eye on the transfer portal and be reporting when necessary. There will likely be more activity and news when it comes to basketball and the portal than with football as Lutz will have to nearly completely rebuild the program if some of the players who entered the portal don’t return.
