Another Very Successful Event for Cowboys (Coaches) vs. Cancer
STILLWATER – Another very successful golf event for the Cowboys vs. Cancer as Oklahoma State senior associate athletic director and a volunteer to both Cowboys vs. Cancer, the Eddie Sutton Foundation, and a cancer survivor himself says, “this is one of the best things we do.” He’s right as the coaches and administration of Oklahoma State University athletics combines with the Eddie Sutton Foundation and volunteers like Kendria Cost, Dave Hunziker, Kim Sutton, and many more work diligently to support the youngsters battling cancer and raise money for cancer research and support. In 2023 the tournament alone raised over $173,000. As of this morning the auction of celebrities for the scramble event at the Stillwater Golf and Country Club had raised $109,200. By the end of the day that total had climbed to close to $195,000.
As usual, the Bucky Foundation of Tulsa which honors the memory of former Oklahoma State University tight end Brian “Bucky” Utter, who passed away after battling cancer in 2015. One of Bucky’s favorite pastimes beside cheering the Cowboys was playing golf, so his friends started The Bucky Foundation.
This year they bid $55,000 to have current Oklahoma State starting quarterback Alan Bowman play with their team. He is the second quarterback to be bid on by The Bucky Foundation as they played with Brandon Weeden in the past.
“He is going between brilliant and really good,” Bucky Foundation boardmember and player Gary Bartlett when asked about Bowman and hw he was playing. We saw Bowman set up a birdie on hole No. 10 for his team.
“I like to play. I wouldn’t say I’m that great, but Iam getting better,” Bowman said humbly. “This is fun and it good in Stillwater in the summer, you get your workout in and go watch film and then by one or two o’clock there are a few of us that like to hang out at the golf course. I’ve got better.
“If I’m available I’m going to be at this event,” Bowman continued. “I just got chills when you said that about what they donated to have me play with their group. It was funny and I didn’t know I was being picked and I looked at Joe (Michalski) our center and said, ‘I’m not even the fifth coolest person her.’ It’s an honor that I get to play with these guys and that much money is going to the battle cancer. It is an honor.”
The Bucky Group ended up shooting 57. The tournament winners were the groups from Chris’ University Spirit and Team ESP as they each shot 51.
I want to put in a good word for my friend John Holcomb as the KOTV sportscaster and color voice on the Cowboys Radio Network had a strong approach shot and a putt that he sank to help his group to an eagle on No. 10. Good going big John!
