Tommy Molsky is First of Cowboys to Go Day Three in MLB Draft and a Trio of Signees Go Too
STILLWATER – Big-time hitter and pitcher Carson Benge in the first round to the New York Mets and centerfielder Zach Ehrhard to the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round were expected high draft picks and the Cowboys knew they were gone after the final out in the NCAA Regional against Florida. It was presumed that highly-rated high school pitching prospects in lefty Kash Mayfield of Elk City (1st round to San Diego and right-hander Braylon Doughty of Murrieta, Calf. (1st round compensation to Cleveland) would go high. However now after the completion of day three with two more pitchers off the roster in lefty Ryan Ure and right-hander Tommy Molsky along with a trio of high school signees and the MLB Draft has potentially taken a high toll on the Oklahoma State baseball roster.
The first name called on Tuesday on the third day of the MLB Draft connected to Oklahoma State was Cowboys red-shirt junior right-handed pitcher Tommy Molsky. Molsky was selected with pick No. 347, the second pick in the 12th round by the Kansas City Royals. The transfer from Penn State played well and provided clutch pitching late in the season. He was 6-3 on the season with 4.83 ERA. In 41 innings he allowed 40 hits with 66 strike outs and 27 walks. Opposing hitters were batting .252 against Molsky.
The only other Cowboys player to get his name called was left-handed pitcher Ryan Ure. Ure could also come back to Stillwater next season. The San Francisco Giants took Ure in the 19th round with the 13th pick and No, 568 overall. The 6-7, 234 pound Easton, Colo. native has had injury problems. This season he had nine appearances with only 3.2 innings pitched allowing three hits with seven strike outs and four walks. He was 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA.
Besides Ure and Molsky, pitchers Brian Holiday, Janzen Keisel, Robert Cranz, and Sam Garcia were all picked on day two.
Also, on day three the Cowboys had three of their high school signees in the 2024 class drafted. Catcher Sir Jamison Jones out of St. Rita High School in Blue Island, Ill. was picjed in the round 15 with the 440th overall pick by the Washington Nationals.
Noah Wech, a right-handed pitcher from Manitowoc, Wisc. and Lincoln High School was selected by the hometown Milwaukee Brewers with the 575th pick in the 19th round.
The good news is Enid, Okla. outfielder Garrett Shull; Carlisle, Ont, Canada pitcher Matthew Brown; Bakersfield, Calf. shortstop Brock Thompson; and Fishers (Hamilton-Southeastern), Ind. left-handed, 6-4 and 205 pound pitcher Ethan Lund were all top 300 prospect signees for the Cowboys that were not drafted.
Now, it will be interesting to see who signs before classes start at Oklahoma State on Aug. 19. If the freshman players that signed show up on campus and don’t sign then they are off the MLB draft board for three years.
