Defensive Review: Finishers Needed as That Appears to Be the Problem

STILLWATER – Okay, all I can do is evaluate the video and give my opinion and that’s what I do. When it comes to the defensive performance, schematics, and effort the Cowboys had a chance to fair so much better in the loss to West Virginia even without the strong playmaking ability of edge rusher/linebacker Collin Oliver and middle linebacker Nick Martin. In fact, Jeff Roberson playing at the mike linebacker in place of Martin gave a strong effort.

Defensive Review: Finishers Needed as That Appears to Be the Problem

Our defense would be helped by being on the sideline more. When they see epic fail by the offense repeatedly and teams running so many more plays at them they get tired and the effort and focus disappears. Yes, getting two of our best players and leaders back would help but that may not occur. With half the season yet to play, we better work on fundamentals and foster competition trying to keep that going for depth and an occasional firing for lack of effort displayed!

The espirit de corps is missing because we have no leaders, those guys are hurt! Somebody or several somebodies need to get that back in these two weeks to try and improve!

We need a standard for fight and effort and not allow excuses for failing to meet it! Effort is something EVERYBODY CONTROLS and there is no excuse for failing in that area.

Robert,
Coach Gundy repeatedly said we need to "fit up better". That means we are not in our gaps, right? This is about reading run/pass and when run, get into your gap. Tackling is technique and effort.

I'm amazed that Robert puts all of the blame on the players. Our "in over his head" DC apparently

has no responsibility whatsoever for the Cowboy defense that is ranked 130 in Division 1 football.

That was before the WVU game! I guess I'll drive to Stillwater to help pull our defensive players out from under

RA's bus.

Hopefully Coach Gundy identifies a DC that is qualified for the position!

I don't think "finishing" is the issue

the issue is NO PASS RUSH.

That silly 3-man front just isn't cutting it and the secondary is getting shredded trying to cover that long. When we go to a 4-man front, we do so by essentially bringing down a LB. Our 6-man box hasn't stopped any rushing attack by any team... which we predicted last year.

Our DLine just isn't that good, which we suspected preseason.

we had these problems before Martin went out, so blaming his replacement seems really silly.

The headline reads "Finishers Needed." I read that to be "Players Needed." Noting players missing too many tackles is the same thing as noting basketball players missing too many shots.

It's not all on the players, though. This many missed assignments or bad techniques has to be attributed to coaching as well.

Agreed! I would add that too many Pokes can't get off of blocks....especially the DL.

I am thinking that we need to fire all the current coaches and hire our top complaining fans to coach. They obviously have more expertise than the guys we have coaching now. I'm pretty sure these people all have college and pro football experience due to the knowledge they display in the comments section. Some might even work for smaller salaries than the ones we have now and we could probably hire a good number of fans who have all the answers. IF you think people do a poor job, then drop your name in the hat and sign up. You really might be able to do better. No one could fault you for trying.

or maybe we could all keep the complaints about the schemes, alignments and plays, and not about the players, coaches or other posters.

That's probably the best option.

I'll sign up to coach for $7million per year. Heck, I'd even sign up to coach at the lowest current coach salary of $400K per year.
