Oklahoma State Loses Barn Burner to Texas Tech 56-48

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State battled Texas Tech all game, playing one of its best games of the season, but came up short in the end, losing 56-48 to the Red Raiders.

With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 3-8 on the season and 0-8 in Big 12 play.

“All right, so we couldn't get off the field on third down again,” head coach Mike Gundy said after the game. “I knew it wasn't good, they were 14-22, but so many opportunities on third down we couldn't get off the field. We weren't very good on third down at 2-9. We did out rush them yards per carry, which is good, five yards a rush, which is what we're looking for. We did not have a good day on special teams. We had a lot of critical errors on special teams. I'm aware of the two bad snaps, which the timing of that wasn't good, but the one that cost us the touchdown, obviously, is not good. But the point being is, throughout the game, we've got to be able to get off the field on third down. But, I was pleased with the way we rushed the ball. I was pleased with the way the young quarterback played. We had a tough day on special teams. That what I told the team was, is that they practiced well enough for two weeks, and they played well enough to win the game. They just had critical errors, which is very uncommon for us here at Oklahoma State, we had critical errors three or four that really cost us the game. So, when you look at it, it gets right down to it, the third downs, and we had three or four critical errors. Couple of special teams, couple of snaps we didn't get lined up correct on the long run on fourth down, critical error. The guys played well enough to win, we just couldn't get off the field on third down, had some critical errors.”

The game turned for the worse for the Pokes late in the fourth quarter. Tahj Brooks got into the end zone from one yard out to put Tech on top 49-42 with 6:12 left in the game. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Joe Michalski sailed the snap over Maealiuaki Smith’s head, which was recovered in the end zone by Tech following a loss of 28 yards. That put Tech up 56-42 with just under five minutes left in the game.

Smith led the Pokes down the field in seven plays and into the end zone on the next drive, completing six passes for 69 yards, capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Owens.

The Cowboys came up with a huge defensive stop on Tech’s ensuing drive, but not before the Red Raiders ran more than two minutes off the clock. Smith led the Pokes out onto the field but threw an interception over the middle to Jacob Rodriguez to end the game.

Freshman Maealiuaki Smith got the start and had a great game as he went 26-of-36 326 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. As for running back Ollie Gordon II, he had his best game of the season as he rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. He also had three receptions for 30 yards on three targets.

De’Zhaun Stribling and Rashod Owens also had great games as Stribling had seven catches for 133 yards  and one touchdown, while Owens had six catches for 124 yards and one touchdown.

As a team, the Cowboys combined for 508 yards, 155 yards on the ground for an average of 5.0 yards per carry. On the other side of the ball, the defense gave up 543 yards, 139 on the ground, but allowed Tech to convert on 14-of-22 third downs.

The Red Raiders struck first as they scored 14 points in the first 10 minutes of the game before the Pokes answered. For his first touchdown of the day, Gordon II broke off a 68-yard touchdown down the right side of the field, complete with a stiff arm. It marked his longest touchdown run of the season, and his longest rush since the Cincinnati game last season.

Gordon II tied the game up at 14 following a one-yard rush up the middle, but the drive featured a 27-yard pass from Gordon II to De’Zhaun Stribling on a wildcat flea flicker.

The Red Raiders would take the lead going into halftime following a 25-yard pass from Morton to Brooks on busted coverage from Kendal Daniels, but Gordon II got into the end zone for the third time early into the third quarter to tie the game up at 21.

After a Tech score five minutes into the third quarter, Smith recorded the first touchdown of his career with a 13-yard rush into the east end zone. But it came after he led a masterful drive down the field, hitting Stribling for 35 yards deep down the right side and then Camron Heard over the middle for 11 yards.

Smith would connect with Stribling on the Pokes’ next drive, a 19-yard touchdown over the middle. Stribling was, however, called for an unsportsmanlike penalty after he punted the ball into the student section.

Brooks got back into the end zone from 40 yards out on the ensuing drive, but the Cowboys tied it right back up following a 19-yard touchdown rush by Rodney Fields Jr., his first rushing touchdown of his career.

The Cowboys are back in action next week on the road at Colorado on Friday, Nov. 29.

So am I still an idiot for saying Smith should've been playing, or……?

It's hard to figure, with a respected QB coach and a head coach that is an offensive minded guy who started as a young QB, why we waited until 4th quarter against TCU, BU and the last home game to try this Frosh QB as a starter vs. Bowman. And I like Bowman as a player, but whatever worked for him last year hasn't worked this year. You just have to wonder between Rangel and Smith if we couldn't have a least made a bowl game. I think this was better yardage than Weeden or Rudolph had as 1st game starters! That's pretty good stuff at OSU.

The Gundy era is over. The coach disqualified himself as leader of the team by vindictively insulting our loyal fans. Time to fire him and move on. Let''s hire a coach who wants to be here and respects the people he works with. It won't be easy but now is the time.

One of the nation's winningest coaches likely isn't going anywhere after one down year unless he's just tired of it all. And that's considering even if he has hurt some folks little, sensitive feelings! Gundy's never claimed to be woke.

I'm starting to think you're Mike Gundy's burner account.

Anyone with eyes could see this was the first time the team was competitive and watchable since BYU. Sorry you didn't get your wish for Bowman to start again.

Thank heavens you're not our AD, with the hills I've seen you die on, you'd probably try to make Nardo the head coach in waiting.

You're right, Gundy doesn't want to be here, doesn't want to win, doesn't respect anyone and has forgotten how to coach.

Does that cover it?

For all you questioners about the QB position, consider:

Smith was 4th team until BYU which means he probably got zero snaps with the first team, next to zero with the second team all fall up to that point.

After Rangel got hurt, there's no way you're gonna hand the position to a true freshman with next to zero snaps until he's had some snaps with an active game plan. Bowman would have gotten 70-80% of the snaps after Rangel got hurt for at least 2-3 weeks. There's just no way Smith could have been ready until after ASU.

Could he have started TCU? I don't know, and neither does any fan because you don't know how he handled the offense in practice, or even how much of the offense he knew/knows, which is RPO heavy.

My feel for the situation is Tech is realistically the first opportunity to hand him the game plan and send him out to start.

Fair enough, fair enough. From my viewpoint it just seemed that the season was down the crapper anyway by the time Rangel got hurt, especially juxtaposed with preseason expectations.

I didn't understand why Gundy was so quick to pull Bowman with everything on the line against Utah, but kept him in so long with nothing on the line in the latter half of the season. With what we'd have seen from him, could Smith have been much worse? And even if he was, what was the downside? I guess maybe the only negative I can see is that his confidence would've been shaken, and that may be worth more than I'm giving credit to, but all those reps going to Bowman just seemed like a waste - as much as I do appreciate him earning the final bedlam win. Whatever mojo he had last year was long gone.

I'd rather have seen him and other younger players get more reps and shift the focus to next season than a senior laden team try to fight for whatever microscopic chance we had at a terrible bowl game in Shreveport or Memphis, but to each his own I suppose.

I'm just grateful that we now have at least something to get excited about in next weeks game.

We all forget sometimes a head coach has an obligation to each member of the team to field the team with the best chance to win.

This post is almost exactly correct.

With respect to his performance last Sat, Tech is probably the worst defense that we've faced all season. Right up near the very, very bad level.

if he shows us anything close to that in Boulder, then we might have the beginnings of a discussion for next year.

Also, isn't he like 170 pounds?

170 pound mobile qb is not optimal for more than a few games.

Not trying to poison, just frustrated. Feel better after watching Smith on Saturday though.

that was an encouraging performance on Saturday, but we just don't know if he was any better, or the Tech defense is just that bad, and Bowman might have gotten more yards, more TDs and actually won the game against Tech. We won't ever know.

Also, we really don't know what we've got just yet, but I've seen Bobby Reid light it up, and Sanders, and then have less desirable outings, and I've also seen Gundy (Mike) thrown in late as a new guy with no experience and be great, as well as, Weeden and Rudolph. So, I've seen it go either way, multiple times.

I think any of the 3 QBs could do well with the offense next year, but I am more than a bit nervous about the new OLine performing as a unit.

I probably won't begin to feel better until after recruiting is done and the Portal is closed. Lots of potential angst between now and then.

Here's to this Saturday!! GO POKES!!

Oh yes, I'm anxious to see how he performs in Boulder, CU's defense is ranked about 60 spots higher than Tech's. Tech is probably comparable to Tulsa in terms of pass defense, but Smith's arm strength/release and some of the throws he made were impressive. He looked pretty darn fast on his TD run as well.

The OL is always a concern for me lol, but hoping having a QB that can move a little with help alleviate some of that. Just hoping this Friday is competitive and entertaining. And excited to see what the plan of action is to get us back to the level of winning we're used to this offseason.
