Updated: Gundy, Shrum and Weiberg Working Out Final Details to New Restructured Contract

STILLWATER – I received an update to the contract talks and my source said they are down to working out final details in a restructured contract. At the late hour as I left the Class 6A-I State Championship Game and I learned much of the contract had been worked out, they were still working over details on hiring control by Gundy of coordinators and staff positions.

Earlier we reported …

All I can say is don’t believe social media and non journalistic sites with regards to the final disposition on Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy. Our sources report that Gundy, OSU President Dr. Kayse Shrum, and athletics director Chad Weiberg are still hammering out a suitable contract that will fit the ramifications apparently demanded by the Oklahoma State/A&M Board of Regents in a specially called meeting. Pokes Report will keep you posted as we learn more about the continuing discussion with Gundy, Shrum, and Weiberg.

The special regents meeting that took place during the time they normally eat breakfast and discuss university topics prior to a regularly scheduled meeting of the regents. The special meeting notice was put out earlier this week, actually on signing day and said the topic was employment evaluation/review of Oklahoma State football staff.

The Regents gaveled into session at 7:30 a.m. and almost immediately the motion was made to go into executive session and that motion passed unanimously. The meeting went on for just over two hours.

Both Shrum and Weiberg joined the meeting just before 8:20 a.m., roughly an hour after it began at 7:30. They left the meeting around 9:20 a.m. Shrum and Weiberg left with identical looks on their faces that seemed to be a mix of shock and disppointment.

Robert Allen - Pokes Report
Harrel was the only member of the regents to speak and reportedly the person most responsible for all of this.

Regents chairperson Jimmy Harrel told the media, including Pokes Report “No Action. We have a plan and it will be enacted soon.” All other regents deferred their comments to chairman Harrel.

The regents left for the fourth floor of The Student Union and their regularly scheduled meeting that ran until mid afternoon. The regents dspursed and there was obviously not going to be a follow up or an expected report or response to the “plan.”

Pokes Report learned the plan was a restructured contract for head coach Mike Gundy that had less salary and some monitored control over the hiring of staff, particularly coordinators. No report what that is. Gundy had been discussing personally donating to the NIL efforts for his players. He also had begun interviewing candidates to replace offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo, who both were let go on Wednesday. Gundy actually had left the day after the loss to Colorado that ended the 3-9 season. It is the worst season under Gundy, but one of only two losing seasons in 20-years as head coach.

Tim Heitman-Imagn Images
Mike Gundy and his staff have worked hard for this rebuilding period in December. Now they will have to work harder.

The hiring of at least one coordinator was imminent and the other hiring was reportedly very close. Gundy and his staff had worked hard to be prepared for the opening of the NCAA Transfer Portal at midnight on Sunday to Monday, Dec. 9. Now because of the negative publicity created by this scenario today that started with the regents executive session and apparent demands. There will be some major clean up needed of the Oklahoma State football, athletic, and institutional reputation.

That is provided a contract is hammered out. We do know that Gundy, Dr. Shrum, and Weiberg want it to get done. The president and the athletic director were supporting the head coach. Now, we just wait for the i’s to be dotted and the t’s crossed. Then it will be time to get to work changing the image that was splashed in the regional and national media from the situation.

THANK YOU ROBERT, I don't know where Holcombe got his information about him being fired but it was like a punch in the gut when I saw him report that!!!

Here's my not-so-profound comments:

Fans and apparently Regents are calling for accountability. Now the BOR want more say-so in football program hires. Just how the hell can you hold a HC accountable when it's not his sole responsibility to hire the coaches HE wants to implement HIS plans?

Destined for failure.

Thank you Robert. I can say that the complete failure of the BOR and Harrell must be addressed. Huge black eye. I think it is time to show our support for our Bill Snyder and let our voices be heard up to the highest level.

Exactly. Get it signed and everyone gets what they want. It's unfortunate but probably necessary the way it played out. Of course, only if the deal gets signed. Delegation of power restored and Mike gets a chance to go out a winner and hero. Plus additional funds for NIL and better coordinators.
Here's to a deal signed, new and exciting coordinators hired, studs plucked out of the portal, and everyone ready to renew tickets. Happy Holidays!

The BOR must be held accountable for this dumpster fire no matter the outcome. Total embarrassment for OSU, the athletic department and fan base. I want to give HCMG the opportunity to fix this because he deserves it. I also plan to work diligently to get a change of leadership on the BOR. Shameful and damaging at such a critical point. Inexcusable actions by the BOR.

Isn't that the situation our Country has been in the last four years, WHOM IS RUNNING OUR COUNTRY!!! Thank God we had that Election in November!!!

This close to the portal opening and they make a spectacle of the entire thing. There is no cleaning this up. Who in their right mind would want to take a chance on the possibility next year you could be seeking employment elsewhere. This was handled unbelievably poorly since 0730 this morning.

The argument could be made that this situation has been handled poorly since 2022 when there were obvious issues. This year was a mirage of false hope based on a team overvalued on some lucky wins in 2023. I understand how the decisions could be made to run with the 10 win veterans but not building a defense around Martin and Oliver in the portal was a huge mistake. Not spending our money on a oline that could take advantage of Ollie and quality receivers. A new qb or rolling with Rangel was also a mistake. The last mistake was not recognizing the weak coordinators that should have been replaced. This all contributed to 3-9 and no conference wins. This all falls on the head coach. I say all this just to point out, today had to happen this way. Just my opinion which is worth absolutely nothing

FWIW, every college football coach and knowledgable pundit, writer or commenter will tell you - THE most akrut predictor of success in any one given season is returning starts, starters and production. We were top 3 in all categories. 2024 was an almost unexplainable anomaly. That's to say literally nobody could have foreseen such a collapse and thus the need to make meaningful changes going into the season. Criticism with the luxury of hindsight may be interesting, but hardly worthy of harsh criticism. My $0.02.

The really stupid thing about this all is the BoR opted for this special meeting and grand stand deadline, when they could have pushed this over to Mike quietly weeks ago, and had all this done without anyone knowing. But no Harrell and company wanted their time in the spotlight. The whole bunch that went along with this need to resign.

True they don't pay 8 million bucks to those that make decisions in hindsight. Those kinds of salaries are for those that recognize the need and act on instincts. Again, here we sit. One thing we can agree on is this needs to end and Coach Gundy needs a chance to fix it

If it is true that an alum was willing to put up 13M to buy out GUNDY, then let's see him do the same to buy players!

Robert Allen is the one that turned this into a big deal with the article he posted Thursday night or early Friday morning. The article has since been pulled off the website. The accusations he made about Jimmy Harrel were pretty bold on his part since his information was second hand. I know Jimmy Harrel he is very intelligent and a good man. Gundy needs some reining in and held accountable for his actions. Some of you don't realize how put out some of the big donors are with Gundy's behavior.

You are 100% correct. The staff got lazy when they let all of those guys come back for their Covid year. Honestly Presley and Cooper were the only two on offense that were good. I was not excited that Bowman was coming back. The remainder of the oline with all of their experience have never been good. They have just been okay at times. The defensive line got worse from 2023 to 2024. The guys that could tackle were injured most or at least part of the season. Those were Martin, Oliver, and Rucker. Almost every team in the conference took steps in the off season to get better except for OSU.

Oklahoma State like all other P4 universities is evolving. Head Coaches aren't as important anymore. OSU will have a football GM eventually but until one is hired, the AD will be the closest thing.

The BOR and big donors, if they really cared about the OSU football program, would not have created this dumpster fire and would have acted quietly and got this done before this critical weekend. This public display was unnecessary and shows those people you are defending are out of touch with the reality of current college football and/or could care less about OSU athletics and/or have a personal vendetta against Gundy by handling it this way. Don't blame RA for reporting on OSU football and the public display of dirty laundry. ESPN and John Holcomb were reporting on it and other sport sites. Did RA call the special meeting this morning two days before the portal opens? No. There was a nine game losing streak going so the BOR could have started this "reigning in" back a couple of games ago, after HCMG's negative comments, and not waited to one of the most critical weekends in the history of OSU football. Seems like a possible set up to restructure the contract, make attracting players and new coordinators impossible, and fail again this next season so HCMG can be fired with less or no payout. The BOR and those big donors do not give a crap about OSU football/athletics, if that is what is happening, and it smells rotten! They are also responsible for setting OSU athletics back decades for doing it this way.

I agree that this is all a very public display that didn't have to play out this way, but honestly I kind of think it's a good thing. I think in general OSU athletics operates in a very "close to the vest" manner that leaves everyone in the dark so when stuff like this gets out (stuff that isn't abnormal news at other big programs) we're all taken aback.

Ultimately I kind of look at this like a marriage that needed to have some frustrations aired out so it can proceed in a healthier way going forward. If it happens publicly, so be it. If this results in more NIL I promise you that recruits and pundits alike will not care about this episode in OSU football history.

But as always - go pokes!

Yeah blame RA for reporting what was going on and not the guy who botched it. IF Harrel was so good at this it wouldn't have played out this way.

Robert Allen is the CNN of college football. He raised the expectation of this team to an insane level. The BOR did not go 3 and 9 and then insult the fan base! Gundy's performance caused it all. The BOR had to step because OSU has weak leadership at the top!

Is there anyone else Robert can blame for the failures of Shrum, Weiberg, and Gundy? Hope the BOR can straighten things out. To blame Jimmy Harrel with no facts is criminal. Robert should be fired immediately. Mr. Harrel should file a lawsuit!

Will there be a need for a AD and 20 Assistant AD's after the GM is hired?
