STILLWATER – It’s hard to believe conference play is already here for Oklahoma State basketball. Yet here we are less than a week from the Pokes hosting Houston on Dec. 30 to ring in conference hoops, and a new year.

We’ll preview the match up with the Cougars a few days closer to the match up. This article will instead be a look back on non-conference play.

The Cowboys finished non-conference play with an 8-3 overall record, 5-0 at home, 2-0 on the road, which is one more road win than the Pokes had last year, and 1-3 on neutral sites. I’ll also be providing the records and NET rankings of each team. The Cowboys are No. 108 in the NET.

Home (5-0)

  • Green Bay W 89-76 (2-12 / 320 NET)
  • St. Thomas W 80-71 (10-4 / 100 NET)
  • Southern Illinois W 85-78 (5-7 / 219 NET)
  • Tarleton State W 66-61 (4-10 332 NET)
  • Oral Roberts W 86-74 (1-8 / 324 NET)

Neutral (1-3)

  • Florida Atlantic L 86-78 (7-6 / 90 NET)
  • Miami W 80-74 (4-8 / 159 NET)
  • Nevada L 90-78 (8-4 / 57 NET)
  • Oklahoma L 80-65 (12-0 41 NET)

Road (2-0)

  • Tulsa W 76-55 (5-7 / 305 NET)
  • Seton Hall W 85-76 (5-8 / 176 NET)

The Cowboys are averaging nearly 79 points per game on 44% shooting from the floor, nearly 34% from 3-point range and 74% from the free throw line. They’re bringing down nearly 38 rebounds per game. They’ve dished out 147 assists to 140 turnovers with 104 steals. They’ve also posted 35 blocks, with Abou Ousmane leading the way with 11.

On the other side of the court, the Cowboys are allowing nearly 75 points per game on 46% shooting from the field, 36% from 3-point range and 66% from the free throw line. Opponents are averaging 31 rebounds per game. They have 142 assists, with the Cowboys forcing 173 turnovers.

Oklahoma State Athletics

Marchelus Avery is leading the Pokes in scoring with 13.0 points per game on 43% shooting from the floor. He’s also first in rebounds with 5.6 per game. It’s impressive as he’s came off the bench in every game, averaging 22.9 minutes per game.

Ousmane is averaging 12.2 points per game on 52% shooting from the floor, mostly in the paint, but is 5-of-8 from 3-point range. He’s also bringing down 5.4 boards per game.

Bryce Thompson is the third Cowboy in double figures on the season, averaging 10.5 points on 40% shooting from the floor.

So far it seems we can't beat anybody with under 100 NET ranking.

The B12 only has 2 teams with a NET ranking above 100, OSU and KSU (122)

Hold onto your hat folks, Houston has a NET ranking of #6

We are going to need to continue to improve, get good defensive effort, and get some good bounces if we hope to get near .500 in conference play.

I believe this is an issue F5 tech is working on.

On the upside, seems like our non-conference went a bit better this year off memory only. I think we only won 12 out of 32 games. Coach has 8 already, so surely we may show a bit of improvement year 1.

They already have one more road win than they did last year, and I think they'll be better in conference play than last year. However, they've got a lot of things they need to fix and conference play is going to expose a lot of those things and I'm not sure they'll be able to fix them in the next few months. I think if they can win at least five conference games, things will be way better next year. I don't want to put limits on things and I'm not certainly saying they can't win games, just that it's going to be tough.
