Report: Oklahoma State Came Close to Hiring Bill Self Last Spring

STILLWATER – There have always been rumors Self would come back to Stillwater to coach Oklahoma State any time there was coaching vacancy, but this time it seemed closer than it ever has.

According to a report by Berry Tramel of the Tulsa World, OSU put Self up in a lodge at Karsten Creek for “a couple of days” following the 2024 season and Self seriously considered the offer presented by the OSU athletic department.

Obviously, that ended up not happening as Chad Weiberg ended up hiring Steve Lutz to take over the program.

Self played basketball at Oklahoma State from 1981-85 and coached under Leonard Hamilton and Eddie Sutton from 1986-93.

During his coaching career at KU, Self has a 605-144 overall record, which includes two national championships, 16 regular-season Big 12 championships and eight Big 12 tournament championships. During that same stretch, the Cowboys have a 420-302 overall record under six head coaches, Eddie Sutton, Sean Sutton, Travis Ford, Brad Underwood, Mike Boynton and Steve Lutz.

I do not believe that for even one instant that Bill Self seriously considered leaving KU. (there are also reports of his imminent retirement).

Good for Weiburg if he did get Self there for a free recruiting trip.....

I don't think Weiberg was the one that got Self there for the discussion. My sources told me back then (requesting complete anonymity and with a promise to not report the story unless the discussions led to an agreement) that the meeting with Self and his wife, Cindy was held at the President's residence. Just my opinion, I think Self was intrigued and surely flattered, but I don't think the chances of him coming to Oklahoma State ever crossed the 50/50 line.

yeah, exactly..... Traber's story makes no sense at all... I think, I haven't actually seen it, since it's hidden behind PPV
