PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Oklahoma State advanced seven wrestlers to the second round of the championship bracket at the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday morning, scoring 15.5 team points to finish the opening session in second place and 8.5 points behind first-place Penn State.

It marks Oklahoma State's highest point total after the first round since the tournament stopped awarding points for byes for the pigtail round in 2013. Applying today's scoring model prior to 2013, this marks OSU's best opening session since the Cowboys opened with 18.5 points during their national title run in 2005.

"I think we had a good round this morning," coach David Taylor said. "We scored some bonus points and got the ball rolling. It's the national tournament. Nothing's easy. We've just got to just focus on seven minutes at a time."

OSU finished the session with an overall record of 8-2 and advanced seven wrestlers to the second round of the championship bracket, including Troy Spratley at 125 pounds, Tagen Jamison at 141 pounds, Caleb Fish at 157 pounds, Cameron Amine at 165 pounds, Dean Hamiti Jr. at 174 pounds, Dustin Plott at 184 pounds and Wyatt Hendrickson at heavyweight.

Oklahoma State, Penn State and Iowa are the only three teams with at least seven wrestlers competing in the second round of the championship bracket. Penn State has 10 and Iowa joins OSU with seven.

The biggest point producer was Hendrickson, who pinned Michigan State's Max Vanadia in just 1:18. He was followed by three who scored technical falls in Spratley, Hamiti and Plott. Teague Travis (149 pounds) fell in a tight 4-0 decision to Virginia Tech's No. 1 Caleb Henson, but he added two points to the team total with a major decision in the pigtail round. Jamison, Fish and Amine each added a point with their decisions as well.

Luke Surber also wrestled in the championship first round, but dropped a high-scoring, back-and-forth match to Citadel's Patrick Brophy.

The 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships continue through March 22 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, with the second session scheduled to begin Thursday evening at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN.
