Oklahoma State Lands Second Penn State Commitment In Gary Steen
STILLWATER – David Taylor is on a role with wrestlers from his alma mater, Penn State, as Oklahoma State has landed a second commitment from the transfer portal and Happy Valley, Gary Steen.
He joins fellow former Nittany Lion, Alex Facundo, who announced shortly before Steen. They joined Iowa transfer, Casey Swiderski, who committed to the Pokes last week.
Steen went 3-3 this past season for Penn State at 133 pounds, a weight up from 125 his first two seasons. After redshirt in 2021-22, Steen won six matches at 125 in 2022-23, starting most of the matches for the Nittany Lions. He went 6-3 his redshirt sophomore season, with three techs and one fall.
125 and 133 are loaded for Taylor and Co. going into next season. Returning at 125 is soon-to-be redshirt junior, Troy Spratley, who finished this season as a national runner-up. At 133 is returners Cael Hughes, JJ McComas and Run Sakamoto following the departer of starter, Reece Witcraft.
Hughes finished his season 13-4 overall and Sakamoto wrestled in just one dual this season, losing 11-1 to Drake Ayala. The freshman out of Stillwater, McComas, finished second wrestling unattached at the Michigan Open early in the season.
It’s going to be really tough to dethrone Spratley at 125, and while Hughes returns with the most experience, 133 is certainly wide open.
