STILLWATER – Oklahoma State is in the middle of putting together a roster for the 2025-26 season. Well, now there are rumors floating around the internet the program will have to deal with as head coach Steve Lutz’ name is being included in the Texas A&M coaching search.

Lutz was hired by Chad Weiberg last April from Western Kentucky, and before that Lutz coached at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, which is a part of the Texas A&M system of colleges.

Now, just how serious are the Aggies and AD Trev Albert? That’s yet to be seen. But there’s no question Chad Wieberg and the OSU athletic department has some big decisions ahead of them in the coming days.

First and foremost, would be trying to figure out how serious A&M would be in trying to hire Lutz away. Then, based on that answer, a new contract extension for Lutz here in Stillwater would be next on the list. However, that’s a question in itself as well based on both Travis Ford and Mike Boynton’s final contract extensions.

In year one with the Cowboys, Lutz finished with a 17-18 overall record, 7-13 in Big 12 play, both of which were more than the 2023-24 season. It was five more overall wins and three more wins in Big 12 play. They also won two more road games than they did in Boynton’s final year.

Lutz signed a five-year contract last year worth $13.5 million. His base salary this past season was $2.4 million and will go up to $3 million in 2028-29.

With A&M's money I cannot believe he would be considered for that job. He has much to prove here before being considered for a big time job with a big time payroll.

Lutz could shut this down immediately saying he's staying put. Absent that, he's in play. Between player and coaching carousel chasing highest $ , it's beyond discouraging to try and build any continuity or loyalty.

Don't extended him….the last time we gave an unproven coach a contract extension it was Travis Ford…that cost us 8 years. Underwood was the same way but that is the risk you take.

Lutz is an unproven commodity, so he is nowhere near being hired by The ATM machine. Chad should not go into panic mode like Holder did with Travis Ford. No raise and no extension. Let any coach walk who wants more than he deserves. Reward outstanding results, not mediocrity. David Taylor reaped rewards this season based on built in criteria. He exceeded first year coaching expectations. Make Gundy's raises be based on performance. Another coach deserving a raise is cross country and track coach, Dave Smith. Coach on the hot seat, Josh Holliday. I think he gets one more season after this current disastrous season. It will be hard to judge Lutz's recruiting ability because of the new pay for play. So he is perhaps forced again to settle for leftovers. Not his fault. But he's going nowhere for a while.

hmmm..... well, no, it's actually nothing like Travis Ford.

Ford was an experienced coach who had good success at UMass, and also took E.Kentucky to the NCAA, and then he proceeded to have a 23-12, 9-7 record at OSU in his first season, with Kentucky looking for a coach, and holder being a new AD.

That is nothing like what Lunt did. Sure, Lunt did better than Boynton's worst season, but not by much.

There is no reason for re-work his contract at this point, and it has NOTHING to do with prior coaches, or your opinion of Holder.

Ford did take us to 5 NCAA tournaments in his 9 seasons, and some fantastic recruits.
