Justin Kirkland Enters Into NCAA Transfer Portal

STILLWATER – The transfer portal can deliver, and it certainly can take away. Defensive tackle Justin Kirkland entered the portal late Friday night, mere hours away from the NCAA Transfer Portal closing, giving Oklahoma State their first two-deep loss to the transfer portal.

The 6-3, 330-pound Kirkland had dropped about 25-30 pounds this offseason and was playing excellent throughout the spring. He had five tackles in the Orange-White spring game and was a defender the fans certainly noticed as he helped the Orange team to a 14-10 win.

Justin Kirkland

Kirkland came to Oklahoma State from Utah Tech where he had gone to play after completing his religious mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The extremely athletic big man from West Haven, Utah, who played high school football and tennis at Roy High School, was also a great personality and individual to have on the team. He is an excellent student and a good football player.

In his first season at OSU (2023) he had 22 total tackles, 11 unassisted, 3.0 tackles-for-loss, two quarterback hurries and two pass deflections. Last season he had 18 tackles, 11 unassisted, 3.5 tackles-for-loss and his first sack at Tulsa.

The expectation is he will end up back in Utah at BYU. The Cougars are spending a lot of money in the current transfer portal window.

The Cowboys return both Iman Oates and Aden Kelley at defensive tackle along with redshirt freshman Luke Webb.

Oklahoma State has two defensive tackles coming via the portal this summer in De’Marion Thomas, who just signed last weekend coming from Vanderbilt. The 6-3, 330-pound Thomas is a former All-State player at Tulsa Union High School. Also arriving is Michael Diatta from Virginia. The 6-4, 292- pound Diatta had 57 tackles, five tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks in his four seasons there.

Check his post….."pursue an opportunity that has been put in front of me". And then goes on to say that's why he's entering the portal. Order of operations a little backwards there. Offer first - then portal? Thought folks went into the portal to be allowed conversations that might result in an offer. I mean it's obviously happening all the time , and I write this a bit tongue in cheek - but the post puts it out there in plain sight how all this works.

Probably a good bet as he is up to about 290 now! He was held out of most contact this Spring because he was coming off the foot injury from last season!

The NCAA made it clear after the first year that they would not enforce the no tampering rule. That's why we need contracts. We can sue people for tampering with a contract. When was the last time you heard about that happening in the NFL?

tampering?

come on guys get it together....

they are allowed to have agents now, and the agent may have been contacting other schools on his behalf, and/or it could have been expressed through friends and family, not direct contact.

nothing to see here...

Rodeo,

Someone clearly offered him a new opportunity before he was in the portal. By rule, that is tampering. Yes, it is happening all of the time now because the NCAA is not enforcing the tampering rule. We need player contracts like the NFL. Once a player is signed, others may not offer them a new deal without going through their current contract holder (their current team). To do so is contract tampering and is subject to civil litigation (you get sued). The NFL (or any other professional sport) does not have a problem with tampering because they have contracts.

I did not read your post, by rule that IS NOT TAMPERING.

YOU CAN HAVE A FREAKING AGENT! For gosh sakes man, the agent can't represent their client because you mislabeled "tampering"?

BY RULE - tampering is when a coach "illegally" directly contacts a player. The legality is very gray now, and almost all of your so-called tampering, is legitimate.

The teams/coaches cannot contact the kids directly - that, by rule, is tampering. The rest, I'm afraid you misunderstand what is actually allowed and what is not allowed.
